Lucy Heartfilia aspires to join the popular guild Fairy Tail despite her destructive reputation. She meets Natsu Dragneel (Dragon Slayer) and Happy, who are searching for the dragon Igneel (Natsu's adoptive father). Lucy is almost enslaved by a con artist posing as Salamander; Natsu saves her and invites her to the guild. The team saves Macao Conbolt from a monster, and the trio officially forms.
The team accepts a mission to destroy the book *Daybreak*, which the client (the son of the deceased author) holds responsible for his father's ruined life. Lucy discovers a secret message in the book: the author was forced by the corrupt Duke Everlue to write it for three years in isolation before committing suicide. She persuades the client to keep the manuscript, which is actually a memoir dedicated to his son. Later, Natsu and Gray are approached by Erza to stop the dark guild **Eisenwald**, which wants to use the cursed flute **Lullaby** for an assassination.
The team discovers that Eisenwald is targeting a guild master conference, including Makarov. Natsu defeats Erigor, the leader. Makarov dissuades Kageyama from carrying out the plan. The demon sealed in Lullaby emerges and prepares to kill everyone, but is destroyed by Natsu, Gray, and Erza. Upon returning to Magnolia, Erza is arrested by an emissary of the Magic Council for the collateral damage.
Natsu tries to save Erza but discovers that the Council had planned her arrest to assert its authority over Fairy Tail. To prove his strength, Natsu and Happy fly off on an S-Class mission without Makarov's permission and persuade Lucy to accompany them. Gray joins them. The mission: to lift the curse of Galuna Island, which turns its inhabitants into demons under the effect of violet moonlight. The team investigates and finds a cult led by **Lyon Vastia** (Gray's former comrade), who wants to resurrect the demon **Deliora** (which their mistress **Ur** sealed).
After the defeat of Lyon's henchmen, Erza arrives to punish them for their disobedience but is convinced by Gray to help finish the mission. Gray reveals to his friends that Ur is still alive, in the form of ice around Deliora, having used the forbidden spell Iced Shell to save Gray's life 10 years ago, when he attacked Deliora after the murder of his parents. Lyon holds Gray responsible for Ur's supposed death. Gray tries to dissuade Lyon from using Moon Drip (which would melt the ice and kill Ur) but is enraged when Lyon admits he already knows the truth.
Gray bat Lyon, but it's too late: Deliora has been resurrected, but immediately dies from having been frozen for 10 years. Erza identifies the curse: a magical membrane created by Moon Drop, which she destroys with Natsu's help. The "inhabitants" turn out to be demons with altered memories. The team returns to Magnolia and finds their HQ demolished by **Phantom Lord**. Levy and her friends are attacked by **Gajeel Redfox** (Phantom Lord's Iron Dragon Slayer). Makarov declares war. Lucy is captured by **Juvia Lockser** and **Sol** (from **Element 4**).
Fairy Tail suspends its attack when Makarov's magical power is drained by Aria (leader of Element 4). José reveals to Lucy that her father (Jude) hired Phantom Lord to retrieve her. After Natsu saves Lucy, José attacks the Fairy Tail headquarters and injures Erza with the Jupiter magic cannon. Natsu enters the mobile fortress, destroys the cannon's energy source, and defeats Totomaru. José prepares the destructive spell **Abyss Break** over Magnolia. Elfman fights Sol after seeing Mirajane in danger. Gray battles Juvia (who instantly falls in love with him).
Gray and Erza, completely recovered, defeat Juvia and Aria, which stops Abyss Break. Gajeel recaptures Lucy and confronts Natsu, who is overpowered by Gajeel's iron magic. Natsu rises after witnessing the destruction of his own HQ, regaining his energy when Lucy summons her celestial spirit **Sagittarius** to ignite a fire he devours. Natsu defeats Gajeel. Meanwhile, Makarov recovers and confronts José, beating him with his ultimate spell **Fairy Law**.
Phantom Lord dissolves after its defeat. Lucy cuts ties with her father and helps rebuild the HQ. She worries about Loke's distance, and discovers he is **Leo**, the celestial spirit banished from his kingdom for causing the death of his contractor (by defending Aries from his cruelty). Loke reveals that he is soon to die from exhaustion. Desperate to save him, Lucy persuades the **Royal Celestial Spirit** to lift the banishment: Loke can return to his kingdom as a spirit bound to Lucy.
Loke invites Lucy and her friends on a paid vacation to a resort, joined by Juvia. The vacation is interrupted when Erza and Happy are kidnapped by four of Erza's childhood friends at the **Tower of Heaven**, built by Jellal to resurrect Zeref. The Fairy Tail team and Juvia infiltrate the tower, finding Erza who has already escaped. Erza reveals her past as a slave. **Siegrain** (a Council member resembling Jellal) persuades the Council to destroy the tower with the weapon **Etherion**.
Erza, Lucy, Gray, and Juvia climb the tower, joined by Simon and Shô (Erza's former friends) after Simon reveals himself to be on Erza's side. After Natsu finds Happy and defeats Wally Buchanan and Millianna, Jellal announces the Council's decision to fire Etherion at the tower, and challenges everyone to defeat it first. The team continues through the tower and defeats **Trinity Raven** (a trio of assassins hired by Jellal).
Erza confronts Jellal at the summit but fails to stop him before Etherion fires. The attack is absorbed by the crystalline lacrima in the tower, sparing everyone: Jellal trapped the Council to provide enough energy to the tower and resurrect Zeref. While Natsu fights Jellal, Simon sacrifices himself to protect Erza from a fatal spell. Enraged, Natsu consumes the Etherion-infused lacrima and activates a superior form of Dragon Slayer, **Dragon Force**, which gives him enough power to defeat Jellal and destroy the tower. Erza tries to merge with the lacrima to stop the explosion, but Natsu saves her.
Erza says goodbye to her childhood friends (slaves). The team returns to Magnolia and finds their HQ rebuilt. Juvia and Gajeel have joined Fairy Tail. The guild prepares for the annual Fantasia parade. Lucy hears about the Miss Fairy Tail contest (to pay the rent). **Laxus Dreyar** (Makarov's grandson) declares his intention to take over the guild by force. With his bodyguards from the **Raijin Tribe**, he petrifies the candidates, imprisons all those over 80 years old (including Makarov), and forces the members to fight each other.
Gajeel and Natsu, trapped in the HQ with the others, are freed. Erza breaks the petrification of Evergreen and restores the other girls. Laxus casts the **Thunder Palace** spell on Magnolia, threatening to destroy the city. The stress of the situation causes Makarov to collapse. Levy uses her expertise in runes to rewrite a runic enchantment and free Natsu and Gajeel. Lucy defeats Bickslow with Loke's help. Juvia and Cana meet Fried Justine, who casts a spell forcing them to fight. Juvia sacrifices herself by destroying a Thunder Palace drone. Mirajane arrives, overcomes Fried after he tortures Elfman, and then persuades Fried to stop fighting.
With the Raijin Tribe defeated, the masked **Mystogan** engages Laxus and fights him to force him to raise the Thunder Palace spell. Their battle attracts Natsu and Erza, who see Laxus tear off Mystogan's mask, revealing that he resembles Jellal. Erza and the rest of Fairy Tail destroy Thunder Palace. Natsu and Gajeel fight Laxus, but their attacks are ineffective. Laxus reveals himself to be a Dragon Slayer (electricity). Frustrated by the failure of his plans, Laxus casts a spell to destroy Magnolia, but it has no effect because he doesn't truly consider everyone his enemy. Natsu defeats him. Levy arrives and tells Laxus that Makarov is dying.
Makarov, fully recovered thanks to Porlyusica, banishes Laxus from Fairy Tail for his actions. During the Fantasia parade, the guild bids farewell to Laxus, stating they will always look out for him. Later, Lucy meets her father Jude, who has lost his business and fortune. Lucy initially refuses to forgive him but reconciles after repelling a dark guild that takes her new workplace hostage. Fairy Tail organizes an alliance with other official guilds to stop **Oración Seis** (one of Fiore's most powerful dark guilds) which wants to activate the ancient destructive spell **Nirvana**. Natsu, Lucy, Happy, Gray, and Erza represent their guild and meet the other guilds: Blue Pegasus, Lamia Scale, Cait Shelter. Before taking action, the alliance is surprised and dominated by Oración Seis.
**Brain** (leader of the Oración Seis) forces Wendy to use her Sky Dragon Slayer magic to resurrect a "Jellal" (actually a copy of Zeref) who can find and unseal Nirvana. Wendy recognizes Jellal as someone she owes a debt to and, despite his evil actions, reluctantly agrees. Natsu arrives to save her and Happy, and brings Wendy to heal an poisoned Erza. Gray and Lyon fight and defeat **Racer**, but Lyon appears to be killed. "Jellal" unseals Nirvana, which reverses good and evil in hearts: Sherry becomes malevolent (despair), Hoteye becomes good. Natsu fights "Jellal" but falls into a trap set by an **Angel** who confronts Lucy.
With the help of **Hibiki Lates** (Blue Pegasus), Lucy defeats Angel. Erza finds Jellal and discovers that he remembers nothing except his name and the location of Nirvana. After Erza reminds him of his past, Jellal tries to self-destruct to destroy Nirvana, but Brain disables his spell and activates Nirvana's true form: a giant merchant city, which he directs toward the Cait Shelter HQ. Natsu and Lucy are attacked by Sherry, who regains her senses when Lyon reappears alive. Natsu fights **Cobra** (Poison Dragon Slayer) and defeats him with a roar that surpasses his supernatural hearing. Hoteye fights **Midnight** but is defeated. Jura defeats Brain, but Nirvana continues to advance.
Running out of strength, Brain lures the heroes into a trap that seriously injures Jura. Erza defeats Midnight, the last member, which awakens Brain's destructive alter ego: **Zero**, sealed by a spell that can only be broken by the defeat of the six. Zero pilots Nirvana to destroy Cait Shelter. Members of Blue Pegasus and Lamia Scale attack Nirvana aboard the **Christina** (Blue Pegasus's damaged airship). Hibiki indicates that the lacrima crystals powering the legs must be destroyed simultaneously. Natsu chooses the crystal guarded by Zero but is too injured. Jellal recovers his memories and helps Natsu, giving him the **Flame of Guilt**, which allows Natsu to activate Dragon Force.
Natsu defeats Zero and destroys the last crystal along with his friends, destroying Nirvana. Jura and Hoteye help Natsu, Wendy, and Jellal escape from the collapsing Nirvana. The **Rune Knights** arrest the members of the Oración Seis and Jellal. Natsu and his friends protest the arrest, but Erza respects Jellal's decision. The next day, the members of Cait Shelter are revealed to be an illusion created by their master, **Robaul**, an ancient tribal spirit who created Nirvana. Wendy joins Fairy Tail. Mystogan warns Wendy of the imminent destruction of Magnolia by a portal in the sky called **Anima**, which makes the city and most of its inhabitants disappear (except Natsu, Wendy, Happy, Carla). They enter Edolas and meet doubles of their friends.
Natsu, Wendy, Happy, and Carla learn that the Fairy Tail guild of Edolas is being hunted by the Royal Army, commanded by **Erza Nightwalker** (Erza's doppelgänger). King **Faust** uses Anima to absorb the magic of Terre-Lande and transform it into lacrima to reconstitute Edolas's magical resources. The team cannot use their magic. They gain the support of their doppelgängers to reach the capital and find Lucy (Earth), who avoided absorption thanks to the Horologium spirit. Carla guides them to the castle, but leads them into Nightwalker's trap. Natsu, Lucy, and Wendy are detained. Happy and Carla are escorted to **Extalia**, a floating city and home of the **Exceeds**, revered in Edolas for their magical powers. Realizing their mission is to kill the dragon slayers, Happy escapes with Carla. Happy is taken in by his parents (unbeknownst to him). Lucy is sentenced to death. Happy and Carla regain their powers and save Lucy.
Faust transforms the Exceed army into a giant lacrima to strike Extalia and grant eternal magic to Edolas. Before Nightwalker can capture Lucy, Happy, and Carla, the three are saved by **Gray** and **Erza Scarlet** from Terre-Lande, restored by Gajeel using his magic. Erza vs Nightwalker; Gray frees Natsu and Wendy (drained by Faust to power a magic cannon). Gajeel goes to the giant lacrima and meets **Panther Lily** (an Exceed and captain of the Edolas army), whom he chooses as a partner. After defeating Faust's minions, Natsu, Gray, and Erza try to use the cannon (concentrated with dragon-slayer magic) to bring their friends back, but are distracted by Nightwalker.
**Chagot** (queen of the Exceed) confesses that the supposed divinity of the Exceed is a sham. Carla's resolution inspires the Exceed. Mystogan (revealed to be the prince of Edolas and son of Faust) sends the lacrima away through an Anima portal, restoring everyone to Earth-Land. The army encircles the Exceed and transforms them into lacrima. Natsu, Gajeel, and Wendy defeat Faust in his robot-dragon **Droma Anim**. Erza beats Nightwalker. Lucy and Gray defend the Exceed. The Fairy Tail guild of Edolas supports them. To prevent a new conflict over Edolas magic, Mystogan reverses the Anima portals to make all magic, taking responsibility for the panic. Natsu pretends to be a wicked "Demon King" so that Mystogan can "defeat" him and reclaim his legitimate place.
Edolas is saved, and the mages of Earth Land and the Exceed return. Magnolia is restored. Chagot explains that the Exceed's "mission" (to kill dragon slayers) is actually a cover to evacuate 100 eggs. Panther Lily is accepted into Fairy Tail. Surprise: **Lisanna** (Mirajane and Elfman's younger sister, presumed dead) is back from Edolas where she was trapped. The guild prepares an **S-Class exam** on the **Sirius Island** (the guild's sacred land). Cana is one of the 8 candidates. Lucy becomes her partner. With Lucy's help, Cana defeats Fried Justine and his partner Bickslow in the preliminary round.
Natsu faces Gildarts (the strongest S-Class) in the preliminary trial. He passes when Gildarts forces him to give up to teach him the benefits of fear. The candidates move on to the main trial: finding the tomb of **Mavis Vermillion** (founder of Fairy Tail). However, **Grimoire Heart** (Fiore's strongest dark guild) arrives at Sirius Island searching for the dark mage **Zeref** (whom Natsu briefly meets). Gajeel is injured after fighting two of Grimoire Heart's forces. Wendy and **Doranbalt** (a Council agent under the name **Mest Gryder**) are attacked by **Azuma** (one of the **Seven Kin of Purgatory**, the 7 strongest of Grimoire Heart).
Makarov tries to repel Grimoire Heart by fighting their master **Hades** (whom he recognizes as **Precht Gaebolg**, his predecessor in Fairy Tail's mastery). But he is completely defeated. The rest of Fairy Tail must face the forces of Grimoire Heart, whose Seven Kin reveal their guild's plan: to awaken Zeref's power to create a new world where only mages survive, with the rest of humanity annihilated. Natsu defeats **Zancrow** of the Seven Kin, but Mirajane and Lisanna are beaten by Azuma, Elfman, and Evergreen by **Rustyrose**. Ultear, the leader of the Seven Kin, discovers and captures the weakened Zeref.
Loke defeats **Zoldio** of the Seven Kin (who possessed the spirit **Capricorn**), freeing the spirit and allowing Capricorn to join Lucy. Still determined to find Mavis's tomb and pass the exam, Cana puts Lucy to sleep and leaves her with Kain Hikaru. Natsu saves her, and they defeat Kain. Erza and Juvia confront **Merudy**, who blames Gray for the death of Ur (Ultear's mother). Juvia sends Erza away and confronts Merudy alone. Merudy synchronizes her physical senses with Juvia and Gray to ensure Gray's death. However, Juvia convinces Merudy not to commit suicide, causing her to surrender.
Cana finds Mavis's tomb and dreams of becoming S-Class to reveal to Gildarts that she is his daughter. Devastated by the realization that she betrayed Lucy, she casts the powerful spell **Fairy Glitter** on the tomb and returns to save Lucy, Natsu, and Wendy from **Blue Note Stinger** (Hades' subordinate). Cana cannot defeat him, but Gildarts arrives to fight him, along with Fried and Bickslow to help Levy and Lisanna against Rustyrose. Azuma destroys the massive Sirius tree that increases the strength of Fairy Tail mages on the island, weakening them. When Erza defeats Azuma and restores part of the tree's magic, the others defeat their opponents. Gray meets Ultear, who tries to trap him to use the Iced Shell spell against Hades.
Ultear plans to use Zeref's power to take revenge on her mother, whom she believes abandoned her. During her fight with Gray, Ultear experiences flashbacks of Ur's memories; seeing that Ur was deceived by false news, Ultear understands and accepts her mother's love. Gray defeats Ultear and reunites with Erza, Natsu, Lucy, and Wendy to confront Hades. Despite a full-power battle and the help of Laxus's return, Hades' power continues to increase. Happy, Carla, and Panther Lily find and destroy the machine that gives Hades his magical power. Weakened, with the Sirius Tree restored by Ultear, the Fairy Tail mages defeat Hades.
Makarov spares Hades, who is killed in his ship by Zeref (revealing that Grimoire Heart's efforts were in vain). Ultear attempts suicide out of guilt, but Merudy saves her; they decide to live together. Makarov suspends the S-Class exam. Cana reveals their kinship to Gildarts. Following Grimoire Heart's attempts to capture Zeref, the dragon **Acnologia** appears and seems to destroy Sirius Island, making the members of Fairy Tail disappear. Seven years later (**X791**), the guild is the weakest in Fiore. But the missing members return, protected by the **Fairy Sphere** spell cast by Mavis's spirit. Lucy learns of her father's death but finds 7 years' worth of gifts proving his love.
The returning members decide to participate in the **Grand Magic Games**, a tournament in Crocus that determines the ranking of the strongest guilds. The reigning champion, **Saber Tooth**, includes two Dragon Slayers (Sting and Rogue). The team plans for 3 months of training, but Natsu and his friends actually spend this time in the celestial world with Lucy. They meet Jellal, Ultear, and Merudy (forming **Crime Witch**), who double their power in exchange for investigating the magical anomaly they detected around the arena. Wendy disappears before the preliminary event; Elfman replaces her. The team narrowly makes it to 8th place (last).
Among the guilds: **Raven Tail** (formed by Ivan, Makarov's son), Saber Tooth, Lamia Scale, Blue Pegasus, Mermaid Heel, Quatro Cerberus, and a second Fairy Tail team (Gajeel, Laxus, Juvia, Mirajane, Jellal as Mystogan). Gray is humiliated by Nullpudding (Raven Tail) and Rufus (Saber Tooth). Lucy vs Flare (Raven Tail), loses after having her magic drained by Obra. Jellal (as Mystogan) vs Jura, forced to lose to Ultear (to hide his identity). Carla has a vision: the destruction of the King of Fiore's palace around a crying Lucy.
Day 2: chariot race. Natsu, Gajeel, and Sting are sick in the chariot. Sting gives up; Natsu and Gajeel finish last. Elfman defeats Bacchus; Mirajane defeats Jenny. Yukino (Saber Tooth) loses to Kagura (Mermaid Heel). Natsu stops mercenaries who kidnap Wendy, mistaking her for Lucy. The kidnapping, attributed to Raven Tail, is actually the work of Captain **Arcadios**, who wants to use the 12 Zodiac Keys (as part of the **Eclipse Plan** against Zeref). Yukino, humiliated and expelled from Saber Tooth, offers her 2 keys to Lucy (who refuses). Natsu confronts the master of Saber Tooth, **Ziemma**.
Day 3: Erza defeats 100 monsters alone. Cana (Jellal's substitute) is first in the display. Laxus defeats Alexei (actually Ivan in disguise), his father, who is participating illegally. Laxus refuses the offer to join Raven Tail. Raven Tail is disqualified. Ivan demands to know where Makarov hid **Lumen Histoire**. Wendy vs Sherria, a draw. Jellal detects a presence similar to Zeref in the arena and suspects Sherria, but it is false. Yajima secures Jellal's release, but his face is exposed to Kagura and Millianna (who want revenge). Minerva brutalizes Lucy on Day 4.
With Raven Tail eliminated and Lucy missing, the two Fairy Tail teams merge: Natsu, Gajeel, Gray, Erza, Laxus. Natsu and Gajeel fight Sting and Rogue in a 2v2. Sting activates Dragon Force alone to keep his promise to **Lector**, and fights Natsu and Gajeel. Natsu defeats both alone. Gajeel discovers a dragon cemetery beneath the arena. Jellal finds a young, hooded woman, the source of the magical power.
Gajeel takes the team to the Dragon's Cemetery where Acnologia (the Dragon King) killed several dragons 400 years ago during the war between dragons over the fate of humanity. Wendy and the others learn Acnologia's history from the spirit of the dragon **Zirconis**. Arcadios and Yukino take them to Mercurius and reveal that the Eclipse Plan aims to go back in time to kill Zeref in a mortal form. **Darton** (Minister of Defense) opposes this and captures Arcadios, Yukino, and Lucy. Day 5 (battle royale). Juvia replaces Natsu. Natsu, Wendy, Mirajane, Happy, Carla, and Panther Lily infiltrate Mercurius and save Lucy and Yukino. **Hisui E. Fiore** (princess) condemns them to death by the **Hungry Wolf Knights**.
Darton confronts Hisui: she is behind the Eclipse Plan and sent Fairy Tail to Hades' Palace to save Arcadios. Hisui reveals a new plan to save the country: a time traveler warned her that 10,000 dragons will devastate the kingdom on July 7th. The Hungry Wolf Knights are defeated. The young hooded figure is revealed to be **a Lucy from the future** who used Eclipse. Erza fights in a 3-way battle against Minerva and Kagura. Kagura wants revenge on Jellal (for Simon's death); Erza takes the blame and saves Kagura from the rubble. Kagura remembers being saved by Erza in her past. Minerva mercilessly attacks Kagura, enraging Erza. Gajeel confronts Rogue, whose shadow comes to life and orders him to kill Gajeel.
Gajeel eats Rogue's shadow and defeats him. Erza defeats Minerva with her **Second Origin**. Jura defeats Olga Nanagia, then is defeated by Laxus. Sting faces Fairy Tail. Future Rogue appears, defeats the army with his shadows, and reveals himself to be Hisui's advisor. He wants to use Eclipse as a weapon, the **Eclipse Cannon**, against the 10,000 dragons. He tries to kill Lucy, but Future Lucy protects her and dies. Natsu fights Future Rogue, vowing to protect the future. Hisui activates Eclipse. Toma E. Fiore informs the guilds of the invasion.
Lucy discovers that the Eclipse Cannon does not exist: Future Rogue sabotaged Eclipse to let in 7 dragons from the past. Lucy and Yukino close Eclipse with the 12 Zodiac Spirits. Future Rogue takes control of the dragons to kill Acnologia and become the new Dragon King. Natsu rallies the present Dragon Slayers (including **Cobra**, freed at Jellal's request). Ultear contemplates killing the present Rogue to prevent his future corruption, but repents and casts the spell **Last Ages** at the cost of her life to reverse time by 1 minute, which saves the lives of those killed during that time, including Gray.
With the help of the dragon **Atlas Flame**, Natsu defeats Future Rogue and destroys Eclipse. The guilds celebrate; Saber Tooth and Fairy Tail make peace. Doranbalt erases the memories of the councilors. Jellal and Merudy receive a letter from an old woman (Ultear aged by Last Ages) speaking of Ultear's sacrifice. Mavis goes to find Zeref (who wants to kill humanity to prevent further conflicts). Natsu and Gray receive a mission from **Warrod Sequen** (10 Wizard Saints and founder of Fairy Tail): to save the completely frozen **Sun Village** (giants). On site, they confront a trio of Sylph Labyrinth hunters who want to steal the **Eternal Flame** (the village's deity) using a vial of Moon Drip. Erza ends up in child form.
The Moon Drip is accidentally spilled, melting a patch of grass. Natsu hears a familiar voice there. Lucy and Wendy defeat Sylph Labyrinth with Flare (who turns out to be a villager). Natsu is turned into a child by **Doriate** (Succubus Eye, demon from Zeref's Book). Erza vs Minerva (again). Gray discovers that ice is Doriate's weakness and defeats him. The winged monster is drawn to the Eternal Flame. Natsu regains his size, and the monster is defeated. The Flame is actually the spirit of **Atlas Flame**, who reveals that **Silver** (Tartaros Demon Slayer) froze the village and warns of **E.N.D.** (a demon Igneel could not kill). Atlas frees the village and disappears.
Celebrations in Sun Village. Kyôka (Tartaros) captures Minerva and destroys Succubus Eye. Jackal blows up the Council Headquarters, killing the advisors. Cobra reveals that Tartaros is composed of Zeref's demons, with E.N.D. as their master. Yajima (retired) is attacked by Tempester, who seriously injures Laxus and the Raijin Tribe. Fairy Tail hunts the other advisors targeted by Tartaros. Natsu and his friends protect **Michello** (attacked by Jackal).
Natsu defeats Jackal, who commits suicide in a failed attack. Michello reveals that Tartaros is killing mages magically linked to **Face**, a bomb that will neutralize Fiore's magic. Erza and Mirajane visit Crawford, who turns out to be an ally of Tartaros and captures them. Natsu discovers the betrayal, follows Crawford to **Cube** (Tartaros's flying HQ), and is captured. Crawford locates Jellal, the last advisor, who fights the released Oración Seis. Crawford acquires Jellal's seal and activates Face. Elfman and Lisanna: Seilah threatens Lisanna and forces Elfman to plant a bomb in the HQ.
Using a magic card game, Cana seals the entire guild to escape the explosion. Happy, Carla, and Panther Lily bring the guild to Cube. Natsu and Lisanna escape and free Erza. Erza vs Kyôka, pierces Cube. Lucy and Wendy find Face. **Franmalth** (a demon imbued with the soul and magic of Hades) stops them. Wendy and Carla flee to Face, attacked by **Ezel**. Wendy absorbs the magical energy, activates Dragon Force, defeats Ezel, and destroys Face. But the countdown continues. Carla reprograms Face to self-destruct. Doranbalt saves them.
Natsu defeats Franmalth and frees Hades' soul, who warns that the Face plan is not over and asks Makarov to reveal Lumen Histoire. Mirajane destroys the resurrection laboratory. Seilah tries to kill Mirajane, who absorbs her powers and summons Elfman. Cube transforms into **Pluto's Grim** (flying monster), sucking in the mages and destroying Magnolia. Lucy escapes Mard Geer's curse, sacrifices the Aquarius Key to summon the **Royal Celestial Spirit** which destroys Pluto's Grim. The Spirit lifts the curse on Fairy Tail. Natsu, Gray, Gajeel, and Juvia save Lucy.
Face has been destroyed but the fight continues to rage between the members of Fairy Tail and those of Tartaros. The Nine Demon Gate team is there, each of our heroes must do their best to get rid of these formidable adversaries. But when the fight seems to turn to Fairy Tail's advantage, a new member of Tartaros joins the dance and changes the situation! When there is only one Fairy left able to fight, does she have the slightest chance against demons?
**Torafuzar** floods the area with poisoned water to kill all Fairy Tail mages. Gajeel fights underwater; Levy provides him with air, allowing Gajeel to transform his iron body into steel in the carbonated water and pierce the demon's defenses. Gray freezes Tempester with his new Demon Slayer magic, Porlyusica makes an antidote for Laxus and the Raijin Tribe. Erza and Minerva reach the control room where Seilah activates Face's countdown using Crawford's body. Erza vs Kyôka. Acnologia appears. **Igneel** emerges from Natsu's body (he was sealed within him). Igneel vs Acnologia. Igneel asks Natsu to retrieve Mard Geer's E.N.D. book.
Kyôka merges with Face's control mechanism to accelerate the detonation. Erza defeats her, but the countdown continues. Makarov hesitates to use Lumen Histoire (Mavis in crystal). Natsu vs Mard Geer for the book of E.N.D., aided by Sting, Rogue, and Gray. Mard Geer summons Ziemma and takes his true demonic form. Sting and Rogue defeat Ziemma. Gray becomes partially demonic to protect Natsu from Mard Geer's curse, then defeats him. The dragons (Grandeeney, Metalicana, Weisslogia, Skiadrum) destroy all of Face's bombs, thwarting Tartaros's plan.
Igneel continues to fight Acnologia. Zeref appears and kills Mard Geer for his failure, taking the book with him. Natsu watches Acnologia kill Igneel. The dragons reveal that they lost their souls (taken by Acnologia) and sealed themselves within the Dragon Slayers. They ascend to a higher plane to watch over humanity. Natsu swears to defeat Acnologia. Fairy Tail dissolves. A year later, Natsu and Happy find Lucy at the Grand Magic Games. They want to revive Fairy Tail; the first step: Lamia Scale (where Wendy and Carla are).
Wendy hesitates to leave Sherria. Natsu helps Lamia Scale repel Orochi's Fin (led by Blue Note). Sherria convinces Wendy to join her friends. The team finds an abandoned village where Gray and Juvia lived. Gray has disappeared. Natsu remembers that Future Rogue had warned that Gray would kill Frosch. Natsu discovers that Gray joined **Avatar** (Zeref's cult) to find E.N.D.'s book. Rogue is diverted to protect Frosch. The team finds Gray, but he seems corrupted by his magic. Erza and Gray were spying on Avatar. The team is captured and then freed by Gray.
The team launches an assault on Avatar and defeats the elites. Alok summons the god of war **Ikusa-Tsunagi** to sacrifice his own disciples to Zeref; Natsu destroys him. Gajeel, Panther Lily, and Levy (Council officers) stop the survivors. Flashback: Zeref resurrects baby Natsu; E.N.D. is created to kill Zeref and end Ankhselam's curse. Zeref challenges Acnologia. Lucy finds Fairy Tail at the destroyed HQ. Erza is named the 7th Master in Makarov's absence. **Mest Gryder** (Doranbalt) appears with Makarov's location.
Fairy Tail learns from Mest that Makarov traveled to negotiate peace with the **Alvarez Empire**, a military nation that surpasses Ishgar. With no news from the team, they organize a rescue team. Brandish μ (one of the **Spriggan 12**, bodyguards of the emperor rivaling the Wizard Saints) and **God Serena** (a deserter Wizard Saint) oppose them. The team reaches Alvarez via a submarine from **Sorano Agria** (former Six God of Destruction, Crime Sorceress). Spriggan = Zeref. Zeref wants Lumen Histoire. Mest saves Makarov from death. The team flees Ajeel Raml.
Cornered by Ajeel, the mages are saved by Laxus's arrival on the Christina (Blue Pegasus). Return to Ishgal, Makarov reclaims his master status. Makarov and Mavis explain: Lumen History = Mavis's crystal body, the source of **Fairy Heart** (infinite magical energy). Flashback: young Mavis meets Zeref and takes the same curse (immortality, life-draining). They fall in love. Zeref places her between life and death (his curse kills those he loves, but cannot kill an immortal). Fairy Heart must be used against Acnologia. Alvarez attacks, Ajeel is defeated.
Erza defeats Ajeel (sand). Brandish fights Lucy (resentment towards Layla), but catches an allergy to Ajeel's pollen. The guild's barrier is breached by **Wall Eehto** (Spriggan 12, mechanical mage). The Raijin Tribe defeats Wall with Ichiya, but discovers he was a puppet; the real Wall attacks from a distance. Ichiya blocks with Christina and calls upon all Fiore guilds for help. Natsu attacks Zeref solo with Igneel's last powers.
Zeref reveals himself as Natsu's brother, telling him that he is E.N.D. and the 400-year plan (Zeref, Igneel, Heartfilia family) against Acnologia. Natsu attacks, but Happy stops him: Zeref's death will kill Natsu. Brandish (imprisoned) tries to kill Lucy to avenge her mother Grammi, supposedly killed by Layla for the Aquarius key. Aquarius returns with her restored key, revealing that Zoldyck killed Grammi, clearing Layla's name. Happy brings the unconscious Natsu back. Porlyusica diagnoses a tumor (magical overload against Zeref). Brandish reduces the tumor. God Serena defeats his peers, the Wizard Saints, and is killed by Acnologia. Erza defends Hargeon, and Laxus destroys the Wall.
Wendy and Sherria vs **DiMaria Yesta** (Spriggan 12, time-stop). Ultear's projection releases time. DiMaria is revealed to be possessed by a deity. Sherria amplifies her anti-divine power with Ultear's Third Origin, permanently losing her magic. In Magnolia, **Jacob Lessio** (Spriggan 12 assassin) attacks Mavis's spirit. Natsu and Lucy defeat him and free their trapped allies. In Hargeon, Erza, Kagura, Jellal vs **Neinhart**, who summons constructs of deceased loved ones and enemies. Erza beats her opponents to exhaustion, and Kagura overcomes her resentment towards Jellal to save him from drowning.
Jellal and allies defeat Neinhart. Gajeel, Levy vs **Bloodman** (Spriggan 12, possessing the same powers as the Tartaros demons), defeat him when Gajeel activates Dragon Force. Bloodman is mortally wounded, dragging Gajeel into the afterlife. Brandish brings Natsu, Lucy, and Happy to negotiate with **August** (considered the most powerful of the Spriggan 12). Mest alters Brandish's memory so she kills August. August survives, showing immense power. Acnologia vs **Irene Belserion** (August's female counterpart). Irene casts **Universe One**: compressing the size of the country, scattering everyone (including Acnologia). Gajeel is saved. Zera (projection) contacts Cana, who releases Mavis. Mavis faces Zeref.
Zeref orders his forces to gather on the hill where the Fairy Tail HQ is located. Gildarts returns and defeats a replica of God Serena created by Neinhart. Brandish wants to keep Natsu, Lucy, and Happy out of combat; Natsu defeats Neinhart. Gray vs. **Invel Yura** (Zeref's chief of staff), who wants to use Gray to eliminate Natsu. Invel brainwashes Gray and Juvia into killing each other, counting on Gray killing Juvia and succumbing to her corruption. Juvia stabs herself and transfers her blood to Gray. Gray, in mourning, defeats Invel. Wendy and Carla save Juvia. Invel forces Gray to fight Natsu by revealing Natsu's nature (E.N.D.).
Brandish returns the tumor to its size. A (bluff) fight against Lucy to maintain her loyalty. DiMaria injures her, taking Natsu and Lucy away. The tumor triggers Natsu's Etherious instincts: he rushes furiously towards Zeref, traumatizing DiMaria. Gray, blinded by his vengeance against E.N.D., confronts Natsu in a death duel. Mavis escapes the HQ. Irene amplifies her soldiers to decimate Fairy Tail. Makarov eliminates them with **Fairy Law** at the cost of his life. Erza, in mourning, separates Natsu and Gray. Lucy and Juvia are fine. Erza, Wendy vs Irene. Kagura vs **Larcade** (Spriggan 12, Zeref's son).
Sting, Rogue, and Kagura defeat Larcade. Irene reveals herself as Erza's mother. 400-year flashback: Irene rules a kingdom where humans and dragons coexist. During a war, she develops Dragon Slayer magic for humans, nearly leading to the extinction of dragons. Her magic transforms her into a dragon while carrying Erza. She flees into nature. Zeref gives her a human body, but she goes mad and tries to possess Erza's body. Present: Irene possesses Wendy, who takes control of Irene and dispels the enchantment. Irene, as a dragon, summons a meteor.
Erza, severely wounded, destroys Irene's meteorite. Irene hesitates to kill Erza (reminiscing of sparing her baby daughter). Overcome with grief, Irene commits suicide with Erza's sword. Natsu (in a mental coma) meets Igneel: two seeds (demon + dragon) threaten his life. Natsu chooses to be human and destroys the two seeds. Natsu heals, and the geography is restored. Gray attempts an enhanced Iced Shell (erasing his existence) on Zeref. Natsu stops him, confirms their friendship, and confronts Zeref. Larcade helps Zeref, who rejects and kills him. **August** is Zeref and Mavis's biological son, fights Gildarts, and commits suicide upon seeing Mavis. Mavis gives the E.N.D. book to Lucy and Gray.
Acnologia returns to hunt the Dragon Slayers, showing that he devours all magic. Wendy and her companions are saved by Blue Pegasus and **Anna Heartfilia** (Lucy's ancestor, former master of the Dragon Slayers). Plan: imprison Acnologia in the space between dimensions (a rift created by Eclipse to transport the Dragon Slayers to the present era). Zeref closes the space to combine with Fairy Heart and open **Neo Eclipse** (a portal to a new timeline where Acnologia would not exist), which would destroy the current timeline. Mavis gets close to Zeref, and he absorbs Fairy Heart. Lucy, Gray, and Happy modify the book of E.N.D. to make Natsu human (his survival independent of Zeref). Lucy takes the risk. Natsu defeats Zeref. The space reopens. Ichiya and Anna rush Acnologia into the space with the Christina, defeating him.
Mavis lifts the shared curse with Zeref by accepting his love for her, which kills them both; she resurrects Makarov. Lucy finishes editing the book before it disappears with Zeref, saving Natsu. Acnologia consumes the space magic and escapes, freeing Ichiya and Anna. He begins to destroy Terre-Lande (instinctive state). Acnologia's disembodied spirit transports Natsu and the Dragon Slayers into space. Lucy decides to seal Acnologia's body with **Fairy Sphere**, luring him to Hargeon. With the magic of all the continent's mages (via Merudy), she immobilizes Acnologia. Natsu kills him with the combined power of the Dragon Slayers. One year later: Lucy's novel ceremony. Two strangers resembling Mavis and Zeref cross paths. Natsu, Lucy, and their friends set off for the **Centennial Quest** (a guild quest never completed in 100 years) — setting up the *Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest* sequel.
