Natsu faces Gildarts (the strongest S-Class) in the preliminary trial. He passes when Gildarts forces him to give up to teach him the benefits of fear. The candidates move on to the main trial: finding the tomb of Mavis Vermillion (founder of Fairy Tail). However, Grimoire Heart (Fiore's strongest dark guild) arrives at Sirius Island searching for the dark mage Zeref (whom Natsu briefly meets). Gajeel is injured after fighting two of Grimoire Heart's forces. Wendy and Doranbalt (a Council agent under the name Mest Gryder) are attacked by Azuma (one of the Seven Kin of Purgatory, the 7 strongest of Grimoire Heart).
