Faust transforms the Exceed army into a giant lacrima to strike Extalia and grant eternal magic to Edolas. Before Nightwalker can capture Lucy, Happy, and Carla, the three are saved by Gray and Erza Scarlet from Terre-Lande, restored by Gajeel using his magic. Erza vs Nightwalker; Gray frees Natsu and Wendy (drained by Faust to power a magic cannon). Gajeel goes to the giant lacrima and meets Panther Lily (an Exceed and captain of the Edolas army), whom he chooses as a partner. After defeating Faust's minions, Natsu, Gray, and Erza try to use the cannon (concentrated with dragon-slayer magic) to bring their friends back, but are distracted by Nightwalker.
