What remains of a console when you turn off the screen?
Put a Magnavox Odyssey from 1972 next to a PlayStation 5.
On one side, a machine incapable of generating a complex environment on its own, using extremely simple shapes and sometimes transparent overlays placed directly on the television screen.
On the other, several billion transistors, an SSD, ray tracing, 3D audio, games measuring tens or hundreds of gigabytes, and a permanent connection to global services.
Yet both objects have exactly the same ambition.
To turn the television into a place where we play.
A little more than half a century separates them.
And nine “generations” of consoles.
But first, we need to break a small illusion.
These generations are not perfectly divided eras.
A new machine does not arrive on Monday morning and magically replace everything that still existed on Sunday evening.
Consoles live for a long time. Some generations overlap for years. The PlayStation 2, for example, continued its journey while the following generation was already well established.
The “nine generations” are therefore mainly a historical framework used to group machines that share a period, certain technologies, and the same commercial battle. Common classifications place the first generation in 1972, the second in 1976, the third in 1983, the fourth in the late 1980s, and so on.
It is not an exact science.
But if you want to understand fifty years of consoles without unrolling three kilometers of cables across the living room, it is extremely useful.
Before the first generation — first, someone had to imagine the console
The idea of using a television as a gaming display appeared before there was even a real home video game market.
Engineer Ralph Baer began working in the 1960s on prototypes capable of producing interactive games on a television.
That work eventually led to a machine released commercially by Magnavox in 1972.
Its name:
Odyssey.
The Computer History Museum notes that the Magnavox Odyssey operated without a microprocessor or genuine software in the modern sense. Its graphical capabilities were so limited that some games used transparent overlays placed on the television screen to represent the field or scenery.
It almost looks like something improvised in a workshop.
Because, in a way, it still was.
But a fundamental idea had just taken shape:
Television is no longer only something we watch. It can become something we interact with.
The video game console was born.
1st generation — 1972 to the early 1980s: when a console mostly played one game
The first generation is the age of discovery.
Magnavox Odyssey.
Atari Home Pong.
Coleco Telstar.
Nintendo Color TV-Game.
And an impressive collection of machines that today often look like objects recovered from the secret laboratory of a 1970s engineer.
They work very differently from modern consoles.
Games are generally built directly into the hardware. A machine may offer several variations of tennis, hockey, or shooting games, but buying a new cartridge is not enough to completely transform the experience.
The first generation therefore remains dominated by simple forms: points, lines, rectangles, and games inspired by Pong.
The important innovation is not graphical
It lies in a much simpler idea:
electronic gaming enters the home.
No need for a university computer.
No need to visit an arcade.
The family television can host a game.
And even Nintendo, long before Mario and Zelda, participates in this period with its first Color TV-Game machines from 1977 onward.
Who wins?
It is difficult to speak of a winner here in the same way we can for later generations.
The market is still trying to find its shape.
Magnavox opens the path.
Atari turns Pong into a phenomenon.
Many manufacturers follow.
But that is precisely the problem: everyone is producing more or less their own variation of the same concept.
What this generation leaves behind
One obvious idea.
The living room can become a game room.
The next generation will now solve a much more interesting problem:
how do you sell new games without forcing the player to buy the entire machine again?
2nd generation — 1976–1992: the cartridge invents the game library
Today, buying a console and then choosing which games to play feels completely normal.
In 1976, it was a revolution.
The Fairchild Channel F became the first console to use programs stored on removable ROM cartridges.
Suddenly, the machine and the game became two separate products.
You buy the hardware once.
Then you build your library.
The principle seems obvious today.
At the time, it changes everything.
Atari immediately understands the potential
In 1977 came the Atari Video Computer System, later renamed the Atari 2600.
The Computer History Museum describes it as the first home video game system to achieve massive success, with more than twenty million units sold during its lifetime.
Around it appeared:
Fairchild Channel F, Intellivision, Odyssey², ColecoVision, Atari 5200, Vectrex…
The market begins to take shape.
And above all, the catalog becomes almost as important as the console itself.
Space Invaders.
Adventure.
Pitfall!.
Pac-Man.
Machines are no longer compared only by their components.
They are compared by what you can play on them.
And this is where the problem begins
The more the console becomes a platform open to games, the more the quality of those games matters.
By the early 1980s, the North American market is saturated with machines and software of wildly inconsistent quality.
The famous crash of 1983 is therefore not simply the story of one bad E.T. cartridge.
It is also a crisis of confidence.
Too many products.
Too little control.
Too many promises.
While the American market is shaking, something is being prepared in Japan.
Something in a red-and-white box.
3rd generation — 1983 to the early 1990s: Nintendo rewrites the rules
In 1983, Nintendo launches the Family Computer, or Famicom, in Japan.
Internationally, it will become the Nintendo Entertainment System.
The NES.
Nintendo does not merely offer a machine.
The company builds a genuinely controlled ecosystem around its games and partners.
And it arrives with a formidable weapon:
characters.
Super Mario Bros.
The Legend of Zelda.
Metroid.
Punch-Out!!
Nintendo notes that the Famicom appeared in Japan in 1983 before becoming the NES in international markets, where its major franchises contributed heavily to its success.
The console becomes a cultural brand
Facing Nintendo, Sega develops the Master System.
Atari attempts a comeback with the Atari 7800.
But the balance of power has changed.
The NES goes far beyond being a simple piece of electronic hardware.
Mario becomes a mascot.
Zelda becomes a universe.
Metroid becomes an identity.
And Nintendo learns to sell something previous generations had not yet fully mastered:
a world around the machine.
The 8-bit era
The generation is often called the “8-bit generation.”
The label is convenient, even if it simplifies a more complex technical reality.
Visually, however, the change is obvious.
Environments become richer.
Scrolling improves.
Characters gain recognizable identities.
Music becomes memorable despite tiny technical constraints.
Technical limitations are no longer only obstacles.
They begin to become a style.
Who wins?
Nintendo.
Very clearly, on the worldwide home-console market for this generation.
The NES / Famicom would reach 61.91 million units sold according to Nintendo’s historical figures.
But Sega is far from finished.
It is preparing the machine that will turn an industrial rivalry into a cultural war.
4th generation — late 1980s to mid-1990s: Nintendo versus Sega
Welcome to the 16-bit era.
Or, more accurately:
welcome to the console war.
PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16.
Mega Drive / Genesis.
Neo Geo.
Super Nintendo.
This generation increases graphical and audio power, but its real change lies elsewhere.
Marketing becomes a weapon.
Sega attacks
The Mega Drive launches in Japan in 1988, followed by North America under the Genesis name.
Sega presents it as a faster, more aggressive machine, closer to the arcade experience.
Then Sonic arrives.
A blue hedgehog wearing sneakers.
Which, when you put it like that, does not necessarily sound like the marketing plan of the century.
And yet.
Sega states that the Mega Drive became the machine in its history with the widest international reach, driven in particular by Sonic the Hedgehog.
Nintendo responds
The Super Famicom arrives in Japan in 1990, later becoming the Super Nintendo Entertainment System elsewhere.
Super Mario World.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
Super Metroid.
Donkey Kong Country.
Chrono Trigger.
Final Fantasy VI.
Sega on one side.
Nintendo on the other.
And in the middle, millions of children absolutely convinced that their parents’ Christmas purchase represented objective proof of worldwide technological superiority.
A generation of experimentation
Manufacturers also begin experimenting with add-ons.
Mega-CD.
32X.
Satellaview.
Super FX.
Some ideas work.
Others feel more like someone stared at their console and thought:
“What if we stacked another machine on top of it?”
But this period is already preparing the next stage.
CD-ROM is arriving.
Polygonal graphics are appearing.
3D is getting closer.
Who wins?
Commercially, Nintendo keeps the worldwide advantage with 49.10 million Super Famicom / SNES units sold.
But reducing this generation to “Nintendo wins, Sega loses” would miss the point.
Sega became a credible global rival.
Sonic became an icon.
And the console war is now as much a battle of culture, advertising, and identity as a battle of processors.
5th generation — 1993–2006: the 3D revolution changes everything
For a long time, video games mainly moved along two axes.
Left.
Right.
Up.
Down.
Then suddenly:
depth.
The fifth generation notably includes:
3DO.
Atari Jaguar.
Sega Saturn.
Sony PlayStation.
Nintendo 64.
And with them comes a gigantic transformation: polygonal 3D gradually becomes the dominant language of console gaming.
Sony enters the room
The first PlayStation launches in Japan on December 3, 1994, followed by North America and Europe in 1995.
Sony arrives almost like an outsider.
Nintendo and Sega already have years of experience in video games.
Sony comes from consumer electronics.
Except the PlayStation understands the moment perfectly.
CD-ROM.
3D.
More adult-oriented marketing.
Strong support for third-party publishers.
And a machine that is relatively attractive for developers.
Nintendo chooses another path
The Nintendo 64 keeps cartridges.
A choice that offers some advantages, including fast access times, but considerably limits storage capacity compared with CD.
Nintendo compensates with several works that will practically become design manuals for 3D games.
Super Mario 64.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
GoldenEye 007.
Mario Kart 64.
Nintendo confirms that the Nintendo 64 launched in Japan in June 1996; the console would eventually reach 32.93 million units sold over its lifetime.
Sega gets trapped
The Saturn has real strengths and an excellent Japanese library.
But its complex architecture, difficult international strategy, and Sony’s momentum weaken Sega.
Atari, meanwhile, fails to establish the Jaguar as a lasting presence.
The real winner?
The PlayStation.
But once again, the numbers are only part of the story.
Above all, this generation invents a grammar that is still used today:
analog stick,
3D camera,
targeting,
polygonal environments,
more ambitious cutscenes,
explorable worlds.
The player is not simply learning how to use a new console.
They are learning how to move through a new dimension.
6th generation — 1998–2013: the console becomes a multimedia center and discovers the Internet
The sixth generation begins with a machine that feels slightly like it comes from the future.
The Dreamcast.
Sega launches it in Japan in November 1998 with a built-in modem and a genuine ambition for online gaming. Sega now presents it as its final home console and as a machine designed from the beginning around network communication.
The Dreamcast experiments with a lot.
Shenmue.
Phantasy Star Online.
Jet Set Radio.
SoulCalibur.
But it arrives in a storm.
Then the PlayStation 2 enters the scene
Sony launches the PS2 in 2000.
Games.
DVD.
Backward compatibility with the original PlayStation.
Network features.
The proposition is brutally simple: the console can replace several devices under the television.
PlayStation highlights exactly these four pillars — gaming, DVD, online features, and backward compatibility — in its official history.
Nintendo chooses the GameCube
Small purple cube.
Mini-DVD.
Handle on the back.
In other words, a machine that was never afraid to admit that it was a console.
The GameCube notably hosts:
Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Metroid Prime.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
Resident Evil 4.
Nintendo would sell 21.74 million units.
And Microsoft arrives
On November 15, 2001, Microsoft launches the first Xbox.
It is a crucial moment.
A market long structured around Japanese manufacturers and historic American companies such as Atari now welcomes one of the world’s software giants.
The Xbox brings an architecture closely related to the PC world and, above all, a franchise called:
Halo.
Then Xbox Live.
Online gaming on console begins to become much more structured.
Who wins?
The PlayStation 2 commercially dominates this generation and becomes one of the most widely distributed machines in video game history.
The Dreamcast, despite its considerable influence, does not save Sega’s hardware business. In 2001, Sega decides to stop production and exits the home-console market.
But a new trio has just formed:
Nintendo. Sony. Microsoft.
It will shape almost the entire home-console market for the following decades.
7th generation — 2005–2017: HD, motion, and connected gaming
The next generation looks like three manufacturers staring at the same problem and coming up with three completely different answers.
Microsoft: connect the players
The Xbox 360 arrives in November 2005.
Microsoft strongly pushes Xbox Live, profiles, achievements, downloads, and online multiplayer.
The console begins to resemble less an isolated box and more a gateway to a service.
Sony: power, Blu-ray, and the PlayStation ecosystem
The PlayStation 3 arrives with an ambitious architecture, a Blu-ray drive, and PlayStation Network.
The transition is difficult at first.
High price.
Complex architecture.
Competitors already established.
But the machine changes considerably throughout its lifetime and hosts games such as:
Uncharted.
The Last of Us.
LittleBigPlanet.
Metal Gear Solid 4.
Nintendo: what if we stopped chasing power?
Nintendo almost approaches the problem backwards.
The Wii does not try to compete directly with the graphical power of the PS3 and Xbox 360.
It offers a motion-sensing remote.
And above all:
Wii Sports.
Suddenly, people who might never have held a traditional controller are playing tennis in front of their televisions.
Nintendo itself presents this period as an opening toward new audiences, with the Wii and Nintendo DS attracting people who did not previously consider themselves gamers.
The generation when consoles truly become connected
Wi-Fi.
Digital stores.
DLC.
Updates.
Profiles.
Trophies.
Achievements.
Permanent multiplayer.
The console no longer simply launches the game inserted into its drive.
It begins to have a life between games.
Who wins?
Commercially, the Wii passes 101 million units sold.
But all three manufacturers gain something different.
Nintendo proves that power is not the only path to success.
Microsoft firmly establishes Xbox and online console gaming.
Sony consolidates PlayStation and prepares a far more direct following generation.
And above all, one transformation is now irreversible:
a console without an Internet connection is beginning to feel incomplete.
8th generation — 2012–2020s: the console becomes a service
The eighth generation begins with the Wii U in 2012, followed by the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2013.
And, a few years later, a Nintendo machine that will seriously complicate every neat generational chart:
the Switch.
Sony returns to the essentials
With the PS4, Sony builds a machine that is relatively easy to understand:
play.
Share.
Download.
Connect.
The generation sees digital downloads, video streaming, massive updates, live-service games, and integrated social features explode.
Microsoft wants to think bigger
The Xbox One is initially presented as a deeply integrated entertainment center.
Television.
Kinect.
Services.
Multimedia.
The strategy meets strong resistance at launch, particularly around some of the initially proposed policies concerning connectivity and physical games.
Microsoft gradually corrects course.
And above all, it transforms Xbox around an increasingly important idea:
the ecosystem.
Backward compatibility.
PC gaming.
Cloud.
And especially Xbox Game Pass.
Nintendo stumbles… then completely changes shape
The Wii U sees limited commercial success: 13.56 million units according to Nintendo.
Then comes the Nintendo Switch on March 3, 2017.
A home console.
A handheld console.
Both.
Simply remove the machine from its dock and the game continues in your hands.
The idea seems obvious once it exists.
As good ideas often do.
By March 2026, Nintendo reports 155.92 million Switch units sold worldwide.
A hybrid machine has become one of the best-selling consoles in history.
Games begin to outlive generations
Fortnite.
Minecraft.
GTA Online.
Final Fantasy XIV.
Rocket League.
Destiny.
Some titles span several machines.
They change resolution.
Server.
Business model.
But they remain.
It is a fundamental change.
In the past, a console generation carried much of its library away with it.
Now, some games outlive the machine that gave birth to them.
9th generation — since 2020: speed gradually replaces waiting
November 2020.
The world is going through a pandemic.
And two new console families arrive almost simultaneously.
Xbox Series X|S.
PlayStation 5.
Microsoft launches the Series X and S on November 10, 2020.
Sony launches the PS5 a few days later depending on the market, beginning on November 12, 2020.
This time, the revolution hides inside time
4K.
Ray tracing.
Higher frame rates.
Spatial audio.
Haptic feedback.
All of that matters.
But one of the most noticeable changes comes from a component that looks much less spectacular on an advertising box:
the SSD.
Loading times drop dramatically.
Data can be accessed far more quickly.
Developers can design certain worlds differently.
PlayStation specifically highlights the combination of CPU, GPU, and SSD as one of the technical foundations of the PS5, while Microsoft makes reduced loading times and gaming at up to 120 frames per second central arguments for the Xbox Series.
Two philosophies emerge
Sony continues to build a strong identity around PlayStation, its productions, and its hardware experiences, notably through the DualSense controller.
Microsoft increasingly emphasizes Xbox as an ecosystem:
console,
PC,
Game Pass,
cloud,
cross-play.
The question gradually becomes less:
“What box do you have under your television?”
and more:
“Where can you access your games?”
And Nintendo arrives in the middle of the chart
On June 5, 2025, Nintendo launches the Switch 2, the direct successor to the Switch.
By the end of March 2026, Nintendo already reports 19.86 million units sold.
Should it be classified as part of the ninth generation?
This is precisely where our neat little framework begins to show its limits.
Sony and Microsoft refreshed their hardware in 2020.
Nintendo launched the Switch in 2017, then its successor eight years later.
Cycles are no longer perfectly synchronized.
Manufacturers are not even playing exactly the same industrial game anymore.
The concept of generations is still useful.
But it is becoming increasingly blurry.
And that is probably not an accident.

The dates intentionally overlap: a generation describes a technological and commercial period, not an official boundary drawn by manufacturers.
Manufacturers are no longer really selling the same thing
If we look at this history from a distance, a change becomes visible.
At first, companies sold a machine.
Then they sold a machine with games.
Then a machine with exclusive franchises.
Then a machine connected to a network.
Today, they increasingly sell an ecosystem.
Nintendo has Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Animal Crossing, and a very particular way of thinking about hardware.
Sony has PlayStation, its studios, its franchises, its network, and its own hardware experience.
Microsoft connects Xbox to Windows, Game Pass, the cloud, and different devices.
The console still exists.
But it is no longer alone.
Atari, Sega, Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft: nobody wins forever
The history of consoles has an almost reassuring quality:
nobody is invincible.
Atari looked unstoppable.
Then Atari collapsed.
Nintendo seemed almost impossible to dislodge.
Then Sony arrived.
Sega stood toe-to-toe with Nintendo.
Then Sega left the hardware market.
Sony dominated with the PS2.
Then Nintendo surprised everyone with the Wii.
The Wii U seemed to expose the limits of that strategy.
Then the Switch became a worldwide phenomenon.
Microsoft entered a market where hardly anyone expected it, and Xbox still exists twenty-five years later.
Every generation places a few certainties on the table.
Then someone flips the table over.
That is probably why this history remains so interesting.
What consoles really changed
We can look at nine generations and see nothing but technical progress.
More memory.
More pixels.
More polygons.
More storage.
More power.
That would be true.
But not very interesting.
Because consoles mainly changed the relationship between the player and the game.
The first generation puts gaming on the television.
The second allows players to choose their games.
The third builds lasting worlds and characters.
The fourth turns the choice of a console into an identity.
The fifth invents a new way to navigate 3D worlds.
The sixth brings consoles, multimedia, and networks closer together.
The seventh permanently connects players.
The eighth turns games and libraries into services.
The ninth begins to gradually detach the experience from the machine itself.
The history of the console is the story of a box that has kept becoming more powerful while, paradoxically, becoming less important.
Because today, what matters extends far beyond the plastic box sitting beneath the television.
Your account.
Your friends.
Your saves.
Your library.
Your subscriptions.
The worlds you inhabit.
And after the ninth generation?
There will probably be more consoles.
More powerful.
Faster.
Perhaps more hybrid.
Perhaps increasingly supported by the cloud or artificial intelligence.
But something already seems to be changing.
The boundaries are becoming less clear.
A game can run across several generations.
A library can follow its player.
A handheld console can run games once reserved for large living-room machines.
A remote screen can receive a game being computed somewhere else.
And manufacturers themselves increasingly talk about ecosystems rather than simple boxes.
So perhaps one day, counting console generations will seem as strange as counting cathode-ray televisions.
Not yet.
The console still has a few lives left.
But after nine generations, one thing is already clear:
the next great battle may no longer be about which machine has the most power.
It may be about which one makes you think about the machine the least.
