Overview

Just Cause places Rico Rodriguez in territories controlled by authoritarian regimes, but its identity is built less around infiltration than around the freedom players have to move through and disrupt these worlds. Vehicles, stunts, the parachute and especially the grappling hook turn movement into a field for experimentation from the very first game.

Just Cause 2 gives this formula a new scale with a much larger open world and a more central use of the grappling hook and parachute. Just Cause 3 pushes this logic even further with the wingsuit and destruction more deeply integrated into movement and combat. Players no longer simply travel through the environment: they constantly chain together propulsion, flight, explosions and improvisation.

Just Cause 4 ultimately expands this arsenal with new grappling hook functions and extreme weather phenomena that themselves become part of the playground. Across these four entries, the series therefore refines a very particular vision of the open world: a space designed less to be crossed carefully than to be manipulated, diverted and transformed into a spectacular chain reaction.
