Synopsis

Mass Effect

In the 22nd century, humanity has discovered technology left behind by the Protheans, a civilization that vanished thousands of years earlier, and has joined a galactic community organized around the Citadel. Humans still hold a relatively recent position within it and seek greater influence with the Council that brings together the galaxy’s major powers.

Commander Shepard serves aboard the SSV Normandy when the Alliance sends the ship to Eden Prime, a human colony under attack by the Geth. During the mission, Shepard comes into contact with a Prothean beacon and receives a fragmented vision showing destruction on a galactic scale.

The attack appears to be connected to Saren Arterius, a respected Turian Spectre theoretically working for the Council. Evidence gathered by Shepard, however, shows that he commands the Geth and is searching for several Prothean artifacts. After convincing the Council of his betrayal, Shepard is granted Spectre status and command of the Normandy, allowing them to pursue Saren freely across Citadel space.

Kaidan Alenko and Ashley Williams accompany Shepard from the early missions, while Garrus Vakarian, Urdnot Wrex, Tali’Zorah nar Rayya and Liara T’Soni can gradually join the crew. Their knowledge of the galaxy’s different species and conflicts becomes essential to understanding Saren’s objectives.

The investigation leads Shepard to places including Feros, Noveria and Virmire. These discoveries reveal that Saren’s ship, Sovereign, is no ordinary vessel: it belongs to the Reapers, an ancient machine species that periodically returns to the galaxy to exterminate civilizations advanced enough to attract its attention.

Saren believes he can ensure his survival by cooperating with Sovereign, without fully understanding the influence the Reaper exerts over him through indoctrination. The search for the Conduit, a Prothean device connected to the Citadel, then becomes a race to stop Sovereign from enabling the return of the entire Reaper fleet.

The final confrontation brings Shepard back to the Citadel, attacked by Saren’s forces and Sovereign. Decisions made during the battle directly influence the political balance that survives the crisis, while the Reaper threat now extends far beyond a simple hunt for a rogue Spectre.

Overview

Presentation

Mass Effect combines the structure of a BioWare RPG with presentation inspired by cinematic space opera. The player creates Commander Shepard, chooses appearance, gender, part of their background and specialization, then keeps this character at the center of a story where decisions can have consequences far beyond an isolated mission.

Six classes define the main approaches. Soldier favors weapons and durability, Adept focuses on biotic powers, while Engineer relies more heavily on technological abilities. Infiltrator, Sentinel and Vanguard combine these specializations in different proportions. This structure gives the first game a particularly strong RPG identity, with skills, equipment, statistics and points to distribute.

Combat takes place from a third-person perspective and combines firearms, biotic powers and technological abilities. Shepard is accompanied by two squad members whose skills can complement their own. A tactical pause allows powers and targets to be selected, certain orders to be issued and attacks to be organized without turning encounters into fully turn-based combat.

Weapons in the original game do not use conventional ammunition. They build heat while firing and become temporarily unusable if they overheat. Assault rifles, pistols, shotguns and sniper rifles behave differently, while mods, armor and other equipment can improve various characteristics.

Biotics use technology associated with element zero to produce effects similar to manipulating mass: throwing an opponent, lifting them into the air or creating different forms of battlefield control. Tech abilities can disrupt shields, disable certain powers or attack enemy systems. Squad composition therefore allows the weaknesses of Shepard’s chosen class to be covered.

The Normandy serves as a mobile base, while the galaxy map allows travel between systems through mass relays. Several major planets host the main story missions, while many systems contain secondary worlds that can be explored for optional assignments, resources or unusual signals.

On certain planetary surfaces, Shepard uses the M35 Mako, an armored vehicle capable of crossing particularly rough terrain and fighting larger enemies. This exploration gives the galaxy an important sense of scale, even though many secondary worlds share fairly similar structures, facilities and activities.

The Citadel plays a different role. This enormous station serves as a political and diplomatic center where Humans, Turians, Asari, Salarians, Volus, Elcor and other species coexist. The opening hours spend considerable time introducing their institutions, tensions and histories, establishing much of the vocabulary that supports the later games.

The companions give this universe a more personal dimension. Garrus offers a critical view of the limits of institutional justice, Wrex directly embodies the demographic trauma suffered by the Krogan after the genophage, Tali introduces the conflict between Quarians and Geth, while Liara contributes her knowledge of the Protheans. Conversations aboard the Normandy gradually allow them to become more than their functional roles within the party.

The dialogue system allows the player to build Shepard in several ways. Paragon and Renegade orientations make it possible to portray a commander who seeks compromise more often or prefers more authoritarian and efficient decisions. Certain social skills unlock specific responses capable of changing a confrontation or resolving a situation differently.

These choices do more than define tone. Several missions impose decisions where not every character can necessarily be saved, while relationships with certain species or institutions can alter the state of the galaxy. From this first game, BioWare designs these choices as parts of a story intended to continue into the sequels.

Saren works particularly well within this structure because his path is tied to the game’s central themes. He views humanity with suspicion and believes he can survive the arrival of the Reapers by making himself useful to Sovereign. Indoctrination gradually reveals that this strategy has stripped him of the control he believed he still possessed.

Sovereign then abruptly expands the scale of the story. For much of the adventure, Shepard is pursuing one individual and trying to prove his betrayal. Discovering the true nature of the ship transforms that political conflict into the first manifestation of an extinction cycle that extends beyond every civilization currently known.

This construction gives the first Mass Effect a particular place within the trilogy. Its combat and exploration are rougher than those of its sequels, but the game devotes considerable space to establishing the galaxy, its species and its conflicts. The universe is not merely a setting for Shepard’s story: it is already one of the game’s main subjects.

What to remember

  • The first game in the original trilogy follows Commander Shepard while hunting the rogue Spectre Saren Arterius.
  • Shepard becomes the first human accepted among the Spectres, elite agents granted extensive autonomy in service of the Citadel Council.
  • Garrus, Wrex, Tali, Liara, Ashley and Kaidan are the main companions who can accompany Shepard on missions.
  • Six classes allow the player to emphasize weapon combat, biotics, technology or different combinations of the three.
  • The Normandy and mass relays allow numerous systems to be explored, with the Mako used across several planetary surfaces.
  • Dialogue, Paragon, Renegade and major decisions allow the player to shape a personal version of Shepard.
  • Saren and the Geth form the visible threat at the beginning of the adventure before Sovereign reveals the existence and true role of the Reapers.
  • Player decisions can be carried into later games and contribute to the continuity of the trilogy.

Conclusion

Mass Effect owes much of its strength to the way it introduces its galaxy at the same time as Shepard earns the right to act within it. Humanity is not yet at the center of galactic institutions, and Spectre status places the character in an intermediate position: representative of an ambitious species, but also an agent tasked with protecting a political order larger than humanity itself.

This perspective allows BioWare to gradually introduce the conflicts that structure the universe. The Krogan genophage, the exile of the Quarians, the creation of the Geth, the disappearance of the Protheans and tensions around the Council are not simply codex entries. The companions give these histories a human face and prepare questions that will continue to develop throughout the trilogy.

The choice system complements this construction by giving Shepard a personality that does not depend entirely on a predetermined script. The moral orientations can sometimes feel visibly divided between Paragon and Renegade, but several major decisions refuse to offer a completely comfortable solution. Their real impact comes above all from the possibility of encountering their consequences again in later games.

Mechanically, this first entry carries more traces of the traditional RPG than its sequels. Equipment management, numerous statistics, long Mako excursions and sometimes stiff combat make it less immediately fluid. They nevertheless contribute to a sense of expedition and discovery that later games will reorganize around more direct action.

The revelation of Sovereign ultimately gives coherence to this first exploration of the galaxy. Shepard moves from investigating Saren’s betrayal to discovering a threat that reframes the entire history of known civilizations. Mass Effect therefore establishes, in a single game, the protagonist, crew, institutions and conflict whose consequences will form the backbone of the next two entries.
