Overview

Presentation

Gears of War: E-Day is a third-person shooter developed by The Coalition. It returns to the origins of the war against the Locust by telling the story of Emergence Day, fourteen years before the events of the first Gears of War.

The story takes place entirely in the city of Kalona during the first three days of the invasion. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago have just returned from the long Pendulum Wars when the ground splits open and the Locust appear on the surface for the first time.

Unlike the later entries set years into the conflict, humanity still knows nothing about its enemies or their tactics. The first encounters are therefore built around confusion, fear and the gradual discovery of a truly organized army.

Marcus and Dom are joined by two new characters: Mags Carter, a former Gear working at an Imulsion refinery, and Lucas Reyes, a young cadet and communications specialist. Together, they gradually form Bravo Squad.

The entire campaign remains focused on this group. The player therefore experiences the collapse of Kalona only through events directly witnessed by the squad.

Gameplay retains the series' signature cover-based combat while significantly modernizing movement. Characters can now slide, vault over obstacles and jump, opening up more vertical possibilities and flanking routes.

Environments alternate between narrow streets, buildings, rooftops and more open districts. The player can therefore attack head-on, flank a position or take advantage of higher ground depending on the situation.

Emergence Holes also return. Locust can burst directly from the ground, and certain openings can be sealed with a grenade before they release more enemies.

Destruction plays a larger role during combat: impacts can gradually damage certain pieces of cover, while larger collapses can reshape streets or swallow vehicles and buildings.

The arsenal combines iconic weapons such as the Gnasher and Longshot with new weapons, including the Gut Puncher, a remotely detonated grenade launcher, and the Incinerator, an Imulsion-powered rifle.

The game also tells the origin of the famous Chainsaw Lancer, assembled in the field from a prototype during the first hours of the conflict.

Conclusion

Gears of War: E-Day returns to the moment when the war against the Locust truly begins, before their behavior, weapons and even their names are known to humanity.

The campaign uses this setting to make the enemies feel more threatening again while telling how Marcus, Dom, Mags and Lucas become Bravo Squad amid the collapse of Kalona.

Gameplay remains built around the cover combat that defines Gears, but freer movement, increased verticality and destruction broaden the possibilities without turning the series into an open-world game.
