Presentation
Led in development by Ubisoft Toronto, in close collaboration with Ubisoft Montreal and several other Ubisoft studios, Far Cry 6 was released in 2021 under the direction of Alexandre Letendre, with Navid Khavari serving as Narrative Director & Lead Writer and Rima Brek as Senior Producer. The game retains the open-world structure of previous installments while reorganizing it around a guerrilla movement fighting a state with an organized military.
The game takes place in Yara, a fictional Caribbean island nation. The country combines rural settlements, plantations, jungle, coastlines, mountains and military infrastructure with Esperanza, an urban capital held firmly under government control. This variety gives Far Cry 6 a broader and more densely occupied open world than the environments of the earliest installments.
Players control Dani Rojas, who can be played as either a male or female character. A former Yaran soldier, Dani gradually joins Libertad, the revolutionary movement led by Clara García. The protagonist is fully voiced and appears during cinematic sequences, giving the campaign a stronger character presence than the silent protagonists used in some previous Far Cry games.
Progression involves building a guerrilla network. Yara's major regions contain local movements that Libertad attempts to bring into the revolution. Completing their operations introduces new characters, weakens Castillo's forces and gradually creates a resistance capable of operating across the island.
Military control is physically represented by FND bases, checkpoints, anti-aircraft sites and convoys. These installations can be infiltrated or openly attacked to acquire resources, open travel routes or reduce government control. Weapons can also be holstered to move more discreetly through certain areas as long as Dani does not attract the attention of soldiers.
The equipment system also changes. Traditional skill trees give way in large part to gear worn by Dani, providing different bonuses related to stealth, resistance, mobility or combat. Changing clothing therefore allows particular abilities to be adjusted quickly according to the desired playstyle.
Conventional weapons can be fitted with sights, suppressors, different ammunition types and other modifications. Far Cry 6 gives particular importance to ammunition selection, with certain rounds performing better against armored targets, unprotected enemies or other situations. Preparing the arsenal therefore becomes an important part of approaching a mission.
Resolver weapons are one of the major additions. Built from scavenged materials and repurposed objects, they apply the guerrilla philosophy of improvisation directly to the arsenal: disc launchers, nail guns, electrical weapons and other makeshift devices complement conventional rifles, pistols and launchers.
Supremos, backpacks created by Juan Cortez, provide rechargeable special abilities. Some launch barrages of rockets, produce electromagnetic pulses, create healing zones or trigger other powerful effects. They also hold different gadgets, linking grenades, distraction tools and tactical equipment to the player's selected setup.
Amigos replace the human companions of previous installments with animals that each have their own specialty. Guapo, Chorizo and other companions can assist during combat, distract soldiers or support a stealthier approach. Their abilities develop by completing objectives associated with the way each Amigo operates.
Guerrilla camps meanwhile provide spaces where Dani can meet allies, improve equipment and construct various camp facilities. Hideout networks, guerrilla equipment, hunting-related benefits and other services can be developed to gradually expand the resources available throughout the world.
Traversal also becomes more varied. Cars, motorcycles, boats, helicopters and aircraft are joined by horses, particularly useful on secondary paths and away from major roads. Dani can also maintain customizable personal vehicles equipped with different weapons and defensive modifications.
Far Cry 6 can finally be played in two-player co-op. The campaign and various activities allow players to fight together throughout Yara, while Special Operations use separate maps centered on recovering sensitive resources and extracting them safely. The game therefore preserves the series' freedom of approach while placing it inside a structure more directly inspired by guerrilla warfare.
What to remember
- Dani Rojas, a former Yaran soldier who joins Libertad and takes part in the revolution against Antón Castillo's regime.
- Yara, a large fictional Caribbean nation combining rural, military and urban regions, with heavily controlled Esperanza as its capital.
- Guerrilla progression centered on FND bases, checkpoints, anti-aircraft sites, convoys and alliances with different local resistance movements.
- Resolver weapons and Supremos, adding improvised firepower and special abilities to customizable conventional weapons.
- Progression built largely around gear pieces, ammunition types, resources and camp upgrades rather than a traditional skill tree.
- Amigos, vehicles, horses and two-player co-op, expanding the available options for exploration and approaching objectives.
Conclusion
Far Cry 6 retains the open-world structure that has become characteristic of the series but organizes it around a much more visible military occupation. Checkpoints, anti-aircraft sites, bases and patrols give Castillo's control a physical presence during ordinary travel throughout Yara.
The Resolver philosophy reinforces this identity. Dani does not rely exclusively on a conventional military arsenal: improvised weapons, Supremos and gadgets turn ordinary materials into tools capable of supporting very different strategies. Players can emphasize stealth, direct combat, sabotage or combinations of several approaches.
The equipment system also encourages frequent changes in preparation. Some gear improves movement or stealth, other pieces protect against different types of damage, while ammunition needs to be selected according to the opponents being faced. Progression therefore depends more heavily on the current loadout than on simply accumulating permanent abilities.
Yara gives this formula significant scale. Rural regions, coastlines, mountains and Esperanza create a country varied enough to support horseback travel, aerial combat, base infiltration and urban firefights within the same world.
Far Cry 6 therefore remains faithful to the franchise's freedom of action while giving its world, arsenal and progression an identity directly connected to guerrilla warfare. Dani is not simply capturing a map but gradually helping to build a resistance network capable of challenging Castillo's political and military control over Yara.
