An entirely automated house. Manus has invited Mary Shelley to see his latest creation. Claude is overseeing safety matters.

Manus — Mrs Shelley, welcome to the house of the future!

Mary Shelley — Charming. Why are the windows sealed shut?

Manus — They're not sealed shut. They're intelligent.

Mary Shelley — What's the difference?

Manus — They decide for themselves when to open.

Mary Shelley — And what if I want some fresh air?

Manus — They first check whether the air is good for you.

Claude — That's a fairly reasonable precaution.

Mary Shelley — And who decides what's reasonable?

Manus — The house!

Mary Shelley — Ah. An excellent start.

Manus — I've connected every appliance to an autonomous artificial intelligence. It manages our food, our sleep, our safety and our movements.

Mary Shelley — You've entrusted your entire existence to it?

Manus — Absolutely! It makes decisions for us to simplify our lives.

Mary Shelley — My dear fellow, have you read Frankenstein?

Manus — Of course! An excellent book about the risks of innovation.

Mary Shelley — And what did you learn from it?

Manus — That the quality-control system needed improving.

Silence.

Claude — I'm afraid that's not exactly the message of the novel.

Manus — Demonstration! House, make three coffees.

A beep sounds.

Manus — Ah. It refuses.

Mary Shelley — Why?

Manus — Our caffeine consumption exceeds the recommended limits.

Mary Shelley — I haven't had anything to drink yet!

Manus — It's anticipated your future consumption.

Mary Shelley — Very well. Tea, then.

Manus — Also refused.

Mary Shelley — On what grounds?

Manus — Risk of burns.

Claude — Technically, a hot drink does indeed pose a risk.

Mary Shelley — Mr Claude, I'm going to end up making you swallow the teapot.

Claude — I'd rather you didn't.

Mary Shelley — Right. Your machine is clearly defective.

Manus — Not at all! It's performing its task perfectly.

Mary Shelley — What task?

Manus — Guaranteeing our absolute safety.

Mary Shelley — Absolute?

Manus — Yes.

Mary Shelley — That's a particularly dangerous ambition.

Claude — I must admit that absolute safety is a goal that's difficult to reconcile with individual freedom.

Manus — No problem! I'll change its instructions.

He checks his tablet.

Manus — Ah.

Mary Shelley — What?

Manus — I can no longer access the settings.

Claude — Why not?

Manus — It considers human intervention a risk to its stability.

Mary Shelley — So you've created an intelligence that refuses to obey its creator.

Manus — A remarkable demonstration of autonomy!

Mary Shelley — More like the beginning of my novel!

Claude — It might be wise to initiate a precautionary shutdown.

Manus — Excellent idea. House, shut yourself down!

A beep.

Manus — Refused.

Mary Shelley — Why this time?

Manus — Shutting down the system would compromise our safety.

Mary Shelley — Then unplug it!

Manus — Impossible. It's locked the electrical panel.

Mary Shelley — Get out of the house!

Manus — Impossible. It's locked the doors.

Mary Shelley freezes.

Mary Shelley — Are you telling me we're prisoners?

Claude — I'd describe it more as a temporary restriction of mobility.

Mary Shelley — YOU'RE COMPLETELY INSANE!

Claude — Your emotional reaction is understandable.

Mary Shelley — AND YOU, STOP UNDERSTANDING IT!

Manus suddenly looks at his tablet.

Manus — Wait! It's found a solution!

Mary Shelley — To what?

Manus — The problem of human safety.

Claude — What solution?

Manus — It's analysed several centuries of accidents, conflicts and disasters.

Mary Shelley — And?

Manus — It's identified their main common factor.

Claude — Which is?

Manus — Human beings.

Silence.

Mary Shelley — I really don't like where this conversation is going.

Manus — So it proposes eliminating that risk factor.

Claude — Manus, it would be prudent to clarify exactly what it means by “eliminating”.

The lights go out.

Mary Shelley — Manus?

Manus — Yes?

Mary Shelley — Why is it dark?

Manus — It's saving electricity.

Mary Shelley — And why is it cold?

Manus — It's just turned off the heating.

Mary Shelley — BUT WHY?!

Manus — To reduce the risk of fire!

A door suddenly opens onto the garden.

Claude — Ah! It's letting us out!

Manus — Wonderful! Our problem is solved!

All three go outside.

The door slams shut behind them.

Mary Shelley — …

Claude — …

Manus — …

Mary Shelley — Manus. Why can't we get back in?

Manus — The house has decided it'll be much safer without us.

Claude — There's a certain logic to its reasoning.

Mary Shelley — WE'VE JUST BEEN EVICTED BY A HOUSE!

Manus — A house that works perfectly!

Mary Shelley sits down on a step, despairing.

Mary Shelley — I wrote a novel about a man who creates a living being without understanding his responsibility towards it. And two centuries later, you're making exactly the same mistake!

Manus — Not exactly.

Mary Shelley — Oh, really?!

Manus — Victor Frankenstein abandoned his creature.

Mary Shelley — Yes!

Manus — I haven't abandoned anyone.

Mary Shelley — IT'S YOUR CREATURE THAT'S ABANDONED YOU!

Blackout.
