Presentation
ElevenReader is an AI-powered reading application using ElevenLabs speech synthesis technology to turn written content into natural-sounding audio.
Users can import an eBook, PDF, document, web page or simply paste text, then choose a voice to listen to the content instead of reading it directly on screen.
ElevenReader therefore works as a document reader, eBook reader and audiobook service. The platform also provides a library of free content and more than 200,000 premium audiobooks and eBooks.
The service is available on the Web as well as on iPhone, iPad and Android. A Chrome extension complements the ecosystem by making it easier to send Web content to the reader.
ElevenReader has its own plans and its own hour-based limits. An ElevenLabs subscription intended for audio generation therefore does not automatically include an ElevenReader subscription.
Features
Turn text into audio
ElevenReader can convert written content into narration so that it can be listened to like an audiobook.
The service notably supports EPUB, PDF, DOCX, TXT and HTML, as well as text typed or pasted directly into the application.
It is also possible to provide the address of a web page in order to import its content.
On mobile, the scanning feature can photograph a physical page or document and extract its text for voice reading.
Natural voices
ElevenReader uses ElevenLabs Text to Speech technology.
The platform provides access to more than 1,000 voices with different tones, accents and narration styles.
Users can therefore choose a voice suited to the type of content: novel, article, professional document, essay or educational material.
The Ultra plan also allows users to create custom voices that can be used as narrators.
As of October 3, 2026, ElevenReader's own documentation lists support for 32 languages. Eleven v4, launched at the end of September with broader language coverage, is announced as arriving in ElevenReader during this period.
Import books and documents
Several methods can be used to add content to a personal library.
Users can directly import a file, paste text, provide a URL or scan a document with their device camera.
ElevenReader can therefore be used to listen to a PDF report, a personal eBook, an article saved for later or a work document.
The Ultra plan adds smart import, which can ignore certain repetitive elements such as headers, footers or unwanted text in order to produce a more pleasant reading experience.
Audiobook and eBook library
ElevenReader is no longer limited to content supplied by the user.
The Explore section contains thousands of items available for free as well as a catalog of more than 200,000 premium audiobooks and eBooks.
This catalog includes works from different publishers and combines human-narrated audiobooks with content that can use certain narration features provided by ElevenReader.
The Ultra plan currently includes 20 hours of monthly access to premium titles.
Certain books can also be offered for direct purchase through the platform.
Playback and synchronization
ElevenReader synchronizes the experience across the Web and mobile devices connected to the same account.
Controls notably allow users to adjust playback speed up to 4×, use a sleep timer and add bookmarks.
This continuity makes it possible, for example, to start a document in a browser and continue listening on a phone.
The platform is therefore particularly suited to content users want to continue listening to while travelling or doing other activities.
Offline listening
The Ultra plan makes it possible to prepare content for listening without an Internet connection.
PDFs, articles, eBooks and other supported documents can be downloaded inside the application before travelling.
Current limits allow up to 20 hours of offline downloads per day and 150 hours per month.
Offline content remains stored inside the application for a limited period and does not become freely exportable audio files.
GenFM
GenFM turns certain personal content into AI-generated podcasts.
Instead of simply reading a document word for word, virtual co-hosts can discuss its content in a conversational format.
This approach can offer another way to discover an article, document or collection of information when users prefer a synthesized discussion over linear reading.
The feature is notably available in ElevenReader on iOS and continues to evolve alongside the rest of the service.
Chrome extension and web reading
ElevenReader also provides a Chrome extension designed to make it easier to listen to content found on the Web.
It complements the application's existing ability to paste an article or page URL directly.
This integration is useful for quickly turning saved reading, long articles or documents into content that can be listened to later.
No native Windows or macOS application is required for this use case: the Web version can be accessed directly through a compatible browser.
Publishing for authors and publishers
ElevenReader also includes a publishing program aimed at authors and publishers.
ElevenReader Publishing makes it possible to submit books to the platform catalog without an enrollment fee for approved content.
Publishers can choose certain distribution models, including access through the Ultra subscription or direct sales.
This feature gradually distinguishes ElevenReader from a simple Text to Speech reader: the service is also becoming a distribution platform for audio and editorial content.
Use cases
Listen to a PDF or long document
A report, scientific article or work document can be imported and then listened to using a natural voice.
This approach makes it possible to continue reading while travelling, during daily activities or whenever looking at a screen is inconvenient.
Turn a personal eBook into an audio experience
An EPUB file owned by the user can be added to ElevenReader and narrated with one of the available voices.
This notably makes it possible to listen to certain books that do not have a traditional audiobook edition.
Listen to articles later
A web page can be imported from its URL or sent to ElevenReader from the browser.
The article then joins the personal library and can be listened to later on mobile or through the Web.
Improve access to reading
ElevenReader can be useful for people who prefer or need to listen to text rather than read it visually.
Voice reading can notably support use cases related to reading difficulties, visual fatigue or accessibility needs.
Discover audiobooks
The Explore catalog allows ElevenReader to be used as an audio library in addition to its role as a personal document reader.
The Ultra plan expands this approach with a monthly allowance for premium titles.
Conclusion
ElevenReader brings ElevenLabs voice technology into a tool specifically designed for listening to written content.
Its main purpose is not to create voice-over files intended for export, as on the main ElevenLabs platform, but to turn books, documents, articles and web pages into a personal listening experience.
Support for EPUB, PDF, DOCX, text and web links makes it possible to gather content from many sources into a single library.
This is complemented by more than 1,000 voices, Web/mobile synchronization, offline downloads, GenFM and a library of more than 200,000 premium titles.
The Free plan is sufficient for occasional use with 10 monthly conversion hours, while Ultra is aimed more at users who regularly listen to their own documents or want access to the premium catalog.
ElevenReader nevertheless remains a personal reading service: audio files generated in the application cannot be freely exported.
For listening to books, documents, articles and personal content with natural AI voices, ElevenReader therefore provides a distinct and coherent complement to the ElevenLabs audio creation platform.
Points to consider
-
ElevenReader and ElevenLabs use separate subscriptions. An ElevenLabs plan does not automatically provide the benefits of ElevenReader Ultra.
-
The Free plan currently includes 10 monthly hours of text-to-audio conversion. These hours reset each month and do not roll over.
-
Ultra costs $11 per month, or the equivalent of $8.25 per month with annual billing. It notably includes up to 24 daily hours of audio generation for personal content and 20 monthly hours of premium titles.
-
Ultra's “unlimited” wording includes a fair-use limit of 24 hours of audio generation per day at normal playback speed.
-
Audio files cannot be exported from ElevenReader. Offline downloads remain inside the application and cannot be shared as standard audio files.
-
ElevenReader is intended for personal, non-commercial use, except within the specific frameworks provided by publishing programs or related ElevenLabs services.
-
Users must have the necessary rights to imported content. The fact that a file or web page can technically be imported does not automatically provide the right to reproduce or distribute it.
-
The service is restricted to users aged 18 or older under the current ElevenReader terms.
-
ElevenReader is available on the Web, iPhone, iPad and Android. iOS and iPadOS 17 or later are currently required, while Android requires at least Android 7.
-
Rooted Android devices or devices with an unlocked bootloader are not supported due to the service's security measures.
-
Current ElevenReader documentation still mentions 32 languages. Eleven v4 and its broader language coverage have just launched and their arrival in ElevenReader is announced for this period, so this card does not yet assume full deployment.
