Volume 1
In Neo-Tokyo, built on the former site of Tokyo after World War III, two teenagers are targeted by agencies after they develop paranormal abilities.
Volume 2
After undergoing a large number of medical examinations and other cognitive tests, Tetsuo manages to escape from the hospital. In the meantime, he has heard of a certain person “Akira” whom he can't wait to meet. For their part, Kaneda and Kei try to escape from the military complex where they were taken prisoner. But then an underground guerrilla group tries to uncover the secrets held by the army...
Volume 3
Once out of the secret military base, Kei and Kaneda find themselves with Akira on their hands. Taking refuge with a member of the guerrillas, they are quickly found by an emissary of Lady Miyako. Then begins in a neo-Tokyo under curfew a chase between members of the guerrillas, the young girls sent by Miyako and the colonel's men...
Volume 4
After the explosion that destroyed the city, Neo-Tokyo gives way to its new face made of ruins. Two forces are now competing for territory: the Great Empire of Tokyo headed by Akira, and the religious organization led by Dame Miyako. The government sent soldiers to liquidate the child prodigy. Tetsuo, finally, gradually gets used to the capsules that release his strength, until Lady Miyako teaches him that the real power lies elsewhere...
Volume 5
Following the cataclysm caused by Tetsuo at the end of the previous volume, an international team of scientists is set up to find a solution to the problem posed. At the Miyako temple, largely destroyed, a reunion takes place between Kaneda, Kei and the colonel who saved Kiyoko. A team is then formed to help Choko, unconscious and injured somewhere in town. Caught in a whirlwind of madness, intoxicated by his own power, Tetsuo takes over space and forms a crater on the Moon, destroying a piece of it. Which is not without consequences on Earth... In order to counter the one who gradually takes on the appearance of a monster, Miyako's choice is clear: she must use Kei to channel the energy allowing her to confront Tetsuo.
Volume 6
This sixth and final chapter of the Akira series marks the apotheosis of the fight between Kaneda, Kei and their friends and the terrible Tetsuo who no longer has anything human. It is Tetsuo's henchmen who bear the brunt of their master's uncontrollable power, before the latter attacks the American armed forces and the scientists responsible for eliminating him. Philosophical questions about life, death, humanity and friendship nourish this final volume from which hope is not completely absent either.
