In this vast survey, Jean-Paul Sartre seeks to understand how individual freedom is embedded in history and in collective structures. In critical dialogue with Marxism, he analyses praxis, rarity, groups, institutions and conflicts in order to lay the foundations for historical anthropology. The book is preceded by "Questions of method", where Sartre describes the relationship between existentialism and dialectical materialism.
