Paris, 1920s. Jake Barnes, American journalist, finds the beautiful and frivolous Lady Ashley, lost in a frantic quest of lovers. We follow them, sipping in alcohol, from Parisian bars to Spanish arenas, passing through the trout streams of the Pyrenees. Their companions, Robert Cohn, Michael Campbell, are all adrift men, marked with red iron by the First World War. In a clear, dreadful style, Hemingway portrays Paris as writers of the interwar period and the famous feasts of San Fermín. His heroes, constantly oscillating between the evil of living and the enjoyment of the present moment, have become the emblems of this generation that Gertrude Stein called "lost".
