Overview
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is an action-adventure game developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and published by SEGA. It is a remake of Yakuza 2, originally released on PlayStation 2, completely rebuilt using the Dragon Engine introduced to the series with Yakuza 6: The Song of Life.
The story follows Kazuma Kiryu, the Dragon of Dojima, after the events of Yakuza Kiwami. As he attempts to distance himself from the criminal underworld, the assassination of the Tojo Clan chairman threatens the balance between the major yakuza organizations.
Kiryu is then forced to travel to Sotenbori in Osaka, where he comes into conflict with Ryuji Goda, known as the Dragon of Kansai. Their rivalry forms one of the main threads of the story, opposing two men who each claim a particular place within the yakuza world.
The adventure takes place mainly between Kamurocho and Sotenbori, two dense urban districts inspired by Tokyo and Osaka respectively.
The Dragon Engine allows these spaces to be explored with fewer interruptions between streets and interiors. Restaurants, shops and various establishments blend more naturally into the city, strengthening the continuity between exploration, encounters and combat.
Battles take place in real time.
Unlike Yakuza Kiwami, Kiryu no longer switches between four distinct fighting styles. Kiwami 2 instead uses a unified system built around strikes, throws, improvised weapons and Heat Actions, powerful contextual attacks triggered when certain conditions are met.
The environment plays a direct role in combat. Kiryu can use different objects found in the streets or inside buildings, throw enemies into the surroundings and move between exploration and fighting with very few transitions.
Progression allows his attributes to be improved and new techniques to be unlocked. Experience is divided between several categories used to develop Kiryu, strengthen his abilities and gain access to different skills.
As in the other games in the series, Kiwami 2 constantly alternates between a serious crime drama and much lighter activities.
Both cities offer side stories, shops and various activities that allow the player to temporarily step away from the main plot. The game therefore preserves the series’ characteristic contrast between crime drama and everyday urban life.
Kiwami 2 also includes the Majima Saga, a separate campaign centered on Goro Majima.
This story takes place between Yakuza Kiwami and the events of Kiwami 2. It allows the player to control Majima in his own battles and adds a narrative chapter that was absent from the original Yakuza 2.
The remake therefore does more than simply modernize the graphics of the 2006 game.
The move to the Dragon Engine transforms the environments, combat and continuity of exploration, while the Majima Saga and several reworked elements expand this new version of Kazuma Kiryu’s second chapter.
What to remember
- Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a remake of Yakuza 2, not a simple remaster.
- The game is completely rebuilt using the Dragon Engine.
- The story notably pits Kazuma Kiryu, the Dragon of Dojima, against Ryuji Goda, the Dragon of Kansai.
- The adventure mainly takes place between Kamurocho and Sotenbori.
- Combat takes place in real time and uses strikes, throws, improvised weapons and Heat Actions.
- Kiryu uses a unified combat system, unlike the four fighting styles of Yakuza Kiwami.
- The Dragon Engine allows smoother movement between streets, shops and certain indoor locations.
- Progression makes it possible to improve Kiryu’s attributes and unlock new techniques.
- The game combines its main crime story with numerous side stories and activities spread across both cities.
- The Majima Saga is a separate campaign that allows players to control Goro Majima between the events of Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2.
Conclusion
Yakuza Kiwami 2 revisits the second chapter of Kazuma Kiryu’s story by rebuilding it around the technology and systems developed for the more recent games in the series.
The Dragon Engine particularly changes the experience of exploring Kamurocho and Sotenbori, while the combat system favors a direct approach based on combos, environmental interactions and Heat Actions.
The Majima Saga complements this reconstruction with an additional story without changing the central role of the conflict involving Kiryu, the Tojo Clan and Ryuji Goda.
Kiwami 2 therefore preserves the series’ characteristic structure: crime drama, street fighting and exploration of Japanese districts filled with side stories, brought together in a new version of Yakuza 2.
