Overview

Presentation

GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE- is a fighting game developed by Arc System Works and directed by Daisuke Ishiwatari. It continues the Guilty Gear series while deeply reworking its pacing, systems and presentation.

The game retains the franchise's distinctive visual identity with 2.5D graphics combining 3D models and Japanese animation aesthetics, complemented by cinematic camera changes during its most spectacular attacks.

Each fighter has a strongly individualized playstyle. Sol Badguy favors a balanced and aggressive approach, while other characters rely more heavily on speed, power, projectiles, space control or entirely unique mechanics.

The combat system encourages initiative. The Tension Gauge notably increases when the player moves forward and attacks, then allows the use of powerful Overdrives or the Roman Cancel.

Roman Cancel can interrupt an action and alter the rhythm of an exchange. Depending on how it is used, it can extend offense, create an opening or regain space while defending.

The Burst Gauge powers several other tools. Psych Burst can notably interrupt an opponent's combo and push them away when the situation becomes dangerous.

With version 2.00, Counter Blitz allows part of this gauge to be spent after certain counters to immediately follow up with another attack. Deflect Shield, meanwhile, provides a defensive option designed to push back opposing pressure.

The Wall Break system also changes how corners work. By keeping an opponent against a wall long enough, the player can break through it, deal additional damage and move the fight into a new area while gaining a temporary bonus.

Strive supports these mechanics with numerous learning tools. Tutorial, Mission and Training modes gradually introduce controls, universal systems, match situations and the specific features of different fighters.

The game also includes Arcade, Survival, Versus, Combo Maker and several forms of online play. The Duel Tower places players according to their skill level, while ranked matchmaking allows them to face opponents of similar strength.

Key points

  • A 2.5D fighting game developed by Arc System Works.

  • The Tension Gauge notably rewards aggressive actions.
  • Roman Cancel can alter or extend many situations.
  • Overdrives consume Tension to unleash powerful attacks.
  • Psych Burst can interrupt an opponent's combo.
  • Counter Blitz uses certain counters to continue the offense.
  • Deflect Shield provides an additional defensive option.
  • Wall Break allows the limits of the arena to be shattered.
  • Positive Bonus notably rewards Wall Breaks.
  • Tutorial, Mission and Training modes support learning.
  • Online play uses rollback netcode.
  • Several platforms support cross-play.

Conclusion

GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE- retains the eccentric characters, speed and strong artistic identity of Guilty Gear while restructuring several mechanics to make its foundations more readable.

Roman Cancel, Burst, Wall Break and the management of its different gauges still give matches substantial depth once the core principles are mastered.

Since launch, the game has also continued to evolve through new seasons, characters and balance updates, making Strive an actively maintained fighting platform rather than an entry frozen in its original release state.

Good to know

GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE- is developed and published by Arc System Works.

The game originally launched on June 11, 2021 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam.

Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Windows versions were added later, with cross-play between PlayStation, Xbox and PC.

The Nintendo Switch Edition launched on January 23, 2025. It has its own online multiplayer with rollback netcode, but does not support cross-play with the other platforms.

The Story Mode directly continues the events of Guilty Gear Xrd. It takes the form of a long cinematic narrative focused notably on Sol Badguy and Asuka R. Kreutz, while character-specific scripted battles are mainly found in Arcade mode.

Additional narrative content titled Another Story follows parallel events involving characters including Ramlethal Valentine.

Online multiplayer uses rollback netcode, designed to reduce the impact of latency during online matches.

Since version 2.00, released in April 2026, the combat system has evolved again: Wild Assault was removed and Counter Blitz added, alongside another general balance update.

As of October 2026, the game continues to evolve with Season 5 and now features more than thirty playable fighters, combining the base roster with DLC characters.

The soundtrack, composed mainly by Daisuke Ishiwatari, retains the strong rock and metal influence historically associated with Guilty Gear.

This entry focuses on the combat system, main modes, Sol Badguy's story and the current state of GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE-, without detailing every character, season or balance change.
