Synopsis

Call of Duty: Black Ops II

In 2025, David “Section” Mason leads a JSOC unit facing a new kind of global threat. Raul Menendez, leader of the Cordis Die movement, uses digital networks, propaganda and international tensions to strike at established powers. Behind this confrontation, however, lies a much older story.

To understand Menendez, David must look back at the operations carried out decades earlier by his father, Alex Mason, and Frank Woods. During the 1980s, their missions in Angola, Afghanistan and Central America gradually put them on Menendez’s trail, whose hatred of the United States becomes inseparable from a series of personal tragedies.

The story therefore alternates between two generations and two forms of warfare. Woods’ memories shed light on the past while David tries to prevent Menendez from carrying out his plan in 2025. Certain decisions made during the campaign can alter the fate of several characters and lead the story toward different conclusions.

Overview

Presentation

With Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Treyarch directly continues the story of the first Black Ops while shifting part of the series into the near future. The contrast between the 1980s and 2025 structures the entire campaign. Missions set in the past retain the covert and political atmosphere associated with the Cold War, while those set in the future introduce drones, automated systems and more advanced weaponry.

This dual timeline primarily allows Raul Menendez to be developed across several decades. Rather than appearing simply as a threat to eliminate, he remains present throughout almost the entire story. His motivations are shaped by events in the past, while his actions in 2025 directly extend the consequences of what Mason and Woods experienced. The conflict therefore becomes as personal as it is geopolitical.

The campaign also introduces a genuine branching structure. Certain choices, successes or failures can change the fate of characters, influence later events and contribute to the ending obtained. Strike Force missions extend this idea by offering more open operations whose results can affect the international situation. For a traditionally highly directed series, the ability to alter certain elements of the story represents an important evolution.

Multiplayer also develops several ideas that would prove lasting. The Pick 10 system allows players to build a class by freely distributing a limited number of points between weapons, attachments, equipment and perks. Players can therefore sacrifice certain elements to strengthen those that genuinely suit their style. This flexibility gives greater importance to decisions made before a match even begins.

Combat nevertheless retains the fast pace characteristic of Call of Duty. Maps encourage frequent encounters, while the Scorestreak system rewards actions that help the team in addition to kills. Environments such as Raid or Hijacked particularly illustrate this focus on compact spaces where movement, sightlines and rapid changes of position shape the fighting.

Zombies finally takes on a new scale. The mode retains survival against waves of undead, weapon purchases and the gradual opening of areas, but experiments with larger environments and different ways to play. TranZit notably connects several locations through a bus, giving exploration an unusual importance within the formula. As in the first Black Ops, this parallel experience also continues to develop its own universe and mysteries.

What to remember

  • A campaign built between the 1980s and 2025, connecting Alex Mason to his son David.
  • Raul Menendez, an antagonist whose personal and political motivations develop across several decades.
  • Choices and branching paths capable of changing certain events, character fates and the conclusion.
  • Strike Force missions, introducing more open objectives and consequences within the campaign.
  • Multiplayer defined by the Pick 10 system and greater freedom in class customization.
  • A Zombies mode that expands its formula with new structures, including the TranZit experience.

Conclusion

Call of Duty: Black Ops II takes more risks than its position as a sequel required. Rather than simply reproducing the paranoia of the first game, Treyarch stretches its story across several decades and imagines a war in 2025 where drones, digital networks and manipulation of public opinion complement conventional weapons.

This ambition is most evident in the campaign. The branching paths do not turn Call of Duty into a role-playing game, but they give certain decisions an unusual weight for the series. The player no longer always follows an immutable succession of spectacular sequences: some mistakes or choices can remain visible several missions later.

The construction around Menendez also gives this dual timeline a particular coherence. The past is not simply a nostalgic detour, and the future does not exist only to showcase new technology. Both periods tell the causes and consequences of the same conflict, passed from one generation of the Mason family to the next.

Combined with a multiplayer mode whose ideas would influence the series for years and an increasingly ambitious Zombies experience, these elements make Black Ops II an installment that seeks less to reproduce its predecessor than to expand what the name Black Ops can encompass.
