Luuna, daughter of the great chief of the Paumanok tribe, reaches the age when she must meet her spirit animal and complete her initiation. But the ceremony goes wrong when Unkui, the evil spirit of the night, imposes two opposing totems upon her: one protective and the other capable of taking control of her during full-moon nights. To free herself from this curse, Luuna begins a long journey toward the tribes of the South, whose shamans may be able to heal her. Her quest takes her across wild lands inhabited by spirits, mythical animals, and peoples with different traditions, while forcing her to confront the dark presence that now lives within her.
