Sonic Youth was an American experimental rock band formed in New York in the early 1980s around Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo and, later, Steve Shelley. The group became known for a radical approach to guitar music, combining alternate tunings, dissonance, feedback and noisy textures with structures drawn from punk, indie rock and the avant-garde. With albums such as Daydream Nation, Goo and Dirty, Sonic Youth became one of the most influential bands in noise rock and alternative rock.
