Duke Ellington was an American pianist, composer and bandleader who became one of the major figures of twentieth-century jazz. Leading his orchestra for several decades, he developed a sophisticated style blending swing, blues, orchestral jazz and ambitious composition, with particular attention to tone color and the individual strengths of his musicians. With works such as Mood Indigo, It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing) and Take the “A” Train, Duke Ellington left a profound mark on jazz history and American composition.
