Count Basie was an American pianist, composer and bandleader who became one of the major figures of swing and jazz from the 1930s through the 1950s. Leading the Count Basie Orchestra, he developed a style built on a powerful yet relaxed rhythm section, precise arrangements, minimalist piano playing and generous space for soloists. With pieces such as One O’Clock Jump, Jumpin’ at the Woodside and April in Paris, Count Basie left a lasting mark on big-band music and orchestral jazz.
