How does the Maure Othello, the valorous general of the Venetian army, come to transform himself into a bloody beast? Why does a being of such a high nobility allow himself to be persuaded by the slanders of a villain, until he kills his beloved wife with his hands? In Othello, which is one of the peaks of the tragic repertoire, Shakespeare explores the vertigo of pure evil - this evil whose birth is obscure, banal, almost imperceptible, and which suddenly opens under our steps a gulf at the bottom of which we see Hell.
