The mysterious island is a novel by Jules Verne published in 1874. It is a continuation of Twenty thousand leagues under the seas, including the reappearance of Captain Nemo, as well as the Children of Captain Grant, with that of Ayrton or Ben Joyce. The work was first published in a series in the Magasin d'Éducation et de Récréation from January 1, 1874 to December 15, 1875, and was released in volume on November 22, 1875.

The mysterious island tells the story of five characters: engineer Cyrus Smith, his servant Neb, journalist Gideon Spilett, sailor Pencroft and adolescent Herbert. To escape the siege of Richmond during the Civil War, they decided to flee with a balloon in the middle of a hurricane, but failed on a deserted island that they would baptize Lincoln Island. After conducting an exploration of the island, they settled there as settlers but something seemed to look after them: who? what? how? and why? How they will survive between wildlife and the people around them.
