Synopsis

Stellar Blade

In a future where humanity has abandoned an Earth devastated by the Naytibas and taken refuge in a space Colony, Eve joins the 7th Airborne Squad sent to reclaim the planet. The operation immediately turns into a disaster: most of her unit is wiped out and her commander Tachy falls against an exceptionally powerful Naytiba.

Eve survives the attack thanks to Adam, a scavenger who still lives on Earth. He takes her to Xion, presented as the last remaining human city, where a reduced population attempts to survive among the ruins. Eve meets Orcal, a central figure in the city, and later Lily, an engineer from an earlier Airborne Squad.

Her initial mission remains clear: locate the Alpha Naytibas and collect the cores required to reach the Elder Naytiba. Eve travels through the remains of ancient cities, underground facilities and vast desert regions while recovering information about the war that destroyed civilization.

These discoveries gradually undermine the version of history transmitted by the Colony and Mother Sphere. Archives left on Earth reveal that the identity of the survivors, the origin of the Naytibas and the disappearance of old humanity are connected to a war between different forms of artificial and biological evolution.

The search for the Elder Naytiba eventually forces Eve to question the mission for which she was created. Several decisions made during the final part of the adventure then determine how she responds to the revelations surrounding Adam, Mother Sphere and the possible future of humanity.

Overview

Presentation

Stellar Blade is Shift Up’s first console game and immediately places the studio within the field of third-person action RPGs. The adventure alternates between linear areas, more open regions and carefully designed boss battles, with progression built as much around mastering the combat system as improving Eve’s abilities.

The Blood Edge is her primary weapon. Light and heavy attacks can be combined into different sequences, but the game is not based solely on aggression. Reading enemy animations, blocking, perfect parries and perfect dodges are essential, especially against the most dangerous Naytibas.

Successful parries gradually reduce an opponent’s balance until Eve can unleash a powerful retaliation. Certain special attacks also require Blink or Repulse to be used at the right moment. The system therefore increasingly rewards knowledge of enemy behavior rather than simple damage output.

Beta Skills complement the basic combos. The necessary energy recharges during combat and can be spent on offensive techniques capable of breaking defenses or controlling several enemies. Burst Skills later add another layer of power, fueled in part by successful defensive actions.

The drone accompanying Eve is not limited to exploration. It can be upgraded into a ranged weapon using several ammunition types, allowing specific weak points to be targeted or distance to be maintained temporarily against dangerous enemies. This aspect remains secondary to the sword, but becomes useful in several encounters and specific areas.

Progression relies on several skill trees. Points earned through combat and exploration develop Eve’s offensive, defensive and tactical abilities. Equipment, Exospines and Gear also modify certain statistics or reinforce particular playstyles, whether by improving parries, available energy or damage.

Camps act as resting and preparation points. Eve can recover resources, unlock or manage certain abilities and equipment, and use various services, but resting also causes many ordinary enemies to respawn. They therefore structure progression through the most dangerous areas.

Exploration alternates between relatively directed environments and semi-open regions. Eidos 7 and Matrix 11 offer more controlled progression, while the Wasteland and Great Desert provide greater freedom. These spaces contain side quests, optional battles, resources, camps, chests and various elements used to reconstruct the history of the world.

Xion serves as the narrative center for a significant part of the adventure. Its inhabitants give Eve requests unrelated to her military mission and gradually reveal what remains of life on Earth. Some quests develop secondary characters, others lead to optional areas or provide further information about the events that preceded civilization’s collapse.

The enemy roster remains one of the main forces driving combat. Naytibas take extremely different forms, ranging from relatively simple creatures to massive and heavily transformed organisms. Bosses generally demand much more precise use of parries, dodges and special resources, and are the encounters where the combat system most clearly reveals its depth.

The game’s aesthetic constantly contrasts beauty with destruction. Eve and several other characters use extremely sophisticated technology while Earth is covered with collapsed highways, abandoned buildings and dead industrial facilities. The environments do not aim only for realism: monumental architecture, biomechanical creatures and a highly stylized art direction give the world a distinctly spectacular identity.

The story uses these ruins to gradually question the very definition of humanity. Eve begins her journey with a simple understanding of the conflict: the Colony represents humanity and the Naytibas must be destroyed. Archives, scientific facilities and the characters she encounters slowly weaken that certainty, turning a military operation into a broader question about the origins of those claiming to inherit the Earth.

This dimension recalls some of the themes explored by NieR:Automata, an acknowledged influence on Shift Up, but Stellar Blade has a different combat structure, more heavily based on parries, reactions to enemy attacks and direct confrontation. The official collaboration with NieR:Automata later extended this connection through cosmetic content integrated into the game world.

After release, Shift Up also added a Boss Challenge allowing defeated bosses to be fought again with different equipment setups. Photo Mode, new outfits and several improvements later expanded the game, while collaborations with NieR:Automata and then GODDESS OF VICTORY: NIKKE introduced additional content.

What to remember

  • A science-fiction action RPG developed by South Korean studio Shift Up.
  • Eve belongs to the 7th Airborne Squad sent from the Colony to reclaim Earth from the Naytibas.
  • A combat system built around combos, blocking, perfect parries, dodges, Beta Skills and Burst Skills.
  • Boss battles play a particularly important role and require learning enemy attacks and timing.
  • Exploration alternates between directed areas and semi-open spaces such as the Wasteland and Great Desert.
  • Xion functions as the main inhabited hub and contains a significant part of the side content.
  • Progression through skills, equipment, Exospines, Gear and drone upgrades.
  • A story that gradually questions the official history of the war, the identity of humanity and the true origin of the Naytibas.

Conclusion

Stellar Blade finds its main balance in the meeting between spectacular action and methodical combat. Eve quickly gains access to many techniques, but the most interesting encounters depend above all on understanding enemy attacks and knowing when to parry, dodge or commit to a special ability. Boss fights give particular value to this precision.

Exploration is less consistent. Some linear areas have carefully controlled pacing and highly detailed architecture, while the Wasteland and Great Desert open progression through more conventional side activities. This alternation nevertheless prevents the adventure from becoming only a sequence of battles and gives enough space to quests, documents and equipment hunting.

The story becomes most interesting when it begins to challenge Eve’s assumptions. The war between humans and Naytibas initially appears relatively straightforward, but discoveries made on Earth gradually shift the boundary between biological organisms, artificial intelligence and reconstructed humanity. The military mission then develops into a story about several forms of life claiming the same inheritance.

The writing of some secondary characters and certain transitions is less accomplished than the combat system, but the world contains enough ideas to support the journey. Xion, Mother Sphere, the Airborne Squads and the remains of the old civilization create a framework that extends beyond simply hunting monsters.

For Shift Up, Stellar Blade is therefore a particularly ambitious first console production. The game combines a strongly defined visual identity, a constantly present soundtrack and an action system precise enough to give its battles a genuine personality. Its aesthetic makes the first impression; the rhythm of its combat and the revelations surrounding its world are what ultimately allow it to go beyond that surface appeal.
