Overview

Presentation

SoulCalibur V is a 3D weapon-based fighting game set 17 years after SoulCalibur IV. This time jump refreshes part of the roster and places Patroklos and Pyrrha Alexandra, Sophitia's children, at the center of the story.

The combat system retains the foundations of the series: each fighter has their own weapon, range and style, while eight-way movement allows players to circle opponents, avoid certain attacks and exploit the boundaries of the arena.

This entry introduces a Critical Gauge capable of storing up to two bars of energy. It becomes a central resource for several new offensive and defensive mechanics.

Critical Edges consume a full bar to unleash powerful special attacks that can be incorporated into certain combos. Brave Edges use a smaller portion of the gauge to enhance existing techniques, for example by increasing their damage or changing their properties.

The gauge is also used for Guard Impact, while Just Guard introduces a defensive option based on very precise timing. The system therefore encourages players to choose between saving energy for a major attack or spending it to control an exchange more immediately.

Quick Move complements this approach by allowing fast lateral movement. It makes use of the arenas' three-dimensional space to evade an attack and create a new opening.

The Story ~1607 A.D.~ mode mainly follows Patroklos during his search for Pyrrha. Divided into around twenty episodes, it focuses the narrative on the two members of the Alexandra family and their involvement in the new conflict surrounding Soul Edge and Soul Calibur.

Character creation returns in an expanded form. Players can modify appearance, clothing, accessories and various visual elements before assigning their fighter the combat style of an existing character.

Outside the story, Arcade, Quick Battle and Legendary Souls offer different battles against the AI. Versus and online modes complete the package for fights against other players.

Conclusion

SoulCalibur V evolves the series' formula by placing greater emphasis on gauge management and introducing several mechanics influenced by competitive fighting games.

Critical Edge, Brave Edge, Guard Impact and Quick Move create more immediate choices during battle while preserving three-dimensional movement and the differences in range created by each weapon.

The entry also stands apart through its seventeen-year time jump and a story much more focused on Patroklos and Pyrrha, before SoulCalibur VI later chose to return to the foundational events of the saga.

Good to know

SoulCalibur V was developed by Project Soul and published by Namco Bandai Games.

The game was released in Europe on February 3, 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Its story takes place in 1607, seventeen years after the events of SoulCalibur IV.

The Story Mode contains 20 episodes and focuses mainly on Patroklos, Pyrrha and their connection to Soul Edge and Soul Calibur.

Ezio Auditore da Firenze, protagonist of the Assassin's Creed series, appears as a guest character and is playable on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The game introduces several new fighters and successors to historic characters from the series, alongside returning figures such as Mitsurugi, Siegfried, Ivy, Nightmare, Maxi and Voldo.

Dampierre, who previously appeared in SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny, is offered separately as an additional character.

SoulCalibur V is the final main entry in the original timeline before SoulCalibur VI returned to the events of the earlier games in 2018.

This entry focuses on the base game, the story of Patroklos and Pyrrha, the Critical Gauge and the core systems of SoulCalibur V, without detailing every fighter or additional content release individually.
