Overview

Overview

Persona 5 Tactica is a tactical RPG developed by ATLUS and published by SEGA. A spin-off of Persona 5, it reunites the Phantom Thieves in an original adventure that replaces traditional Palace exploration with tactical battles fought across environments divided into movement areas.

Following a mysterious incident, the group is transported to a world dominated by the Legionnaires, a military force that keeps its inhabitants under control. The Phantom Thieves then meet Erina, the leader of a resistance movement who asks for their help in leading a revolution.

This new situation allows the game to preserve several fundamental ideas from Persona 5 — rebellion, oppression, Personas and the identity of the Phantom Thieves — while significantly changing the way battles work.

Missions are played with a team of three characters selected before the battle. Each has their own characteristics, weapons, Persona abilities and movement options, encouraging players to adapt the party composition to the objectives of each mission.

Positioning forms the basis of the system.

Characters can take cover behind different elements of the environment to reduce or avoid certain ranged attacks. Forcing an enemy out of cover, moving them or attacking from a favorable position can instead leave them vulnerable.

Firearms therefore play an important role, but they are complemented by melee attacks and Persona skills. Some abilities deal damage, alter enemy positioning or create the conditions needed for a coordinated attack.

The One More system, already central to Persona 5, is adapted to this tactical structure. Putting an enemy at a disadvantage can grant an additional action to the character involved, allowing them to continue moving or prepare another offensive move.

One of the game’s signature mechanics is Triple Threat.

When a vulnerable enemy stands inside a triangle formed by the three party members, they can launch a coordinated attack that hits enemies within the area. Its effectiveness therefore depends directly on how the characters are positioned on the battlefield.

This mechanic makes movement an essential part of combat: it is not enough to use the strongest available skill, as players must also position the team to create an advantage without exposing them unnecessarily.

Progression also relies on skill trees unique to each character. These allow certain attacks to be strengthened, abilities to be improved or each party member’s role to be gradually specialized.

Personas are also still present.

Alongside their own abilities, the Phantom Thieves can use additional Personas to expand their options and adapt their skills to different missions.

Persona 5 Tactica also retains the strongly defined visual identity of Persona 5, while adopting characters with more compact proportions and environments designed to remain readable during tactical battles.

The result therefore does not simply reproduce Persona 5 in a shorter format: it takes its characters, universe and selected mechanics and rebuilds them around a turn-based strategy RPG.

What to remember

  • Persona 5 Tactica is a tactical spin-off of Persona 5, centered on a new Phantom Thieves adventure.
  • Battles are fought turn by turn with a team of three characters.
  • Positioning and cover strongly determine the offensive and defensive effectiveness of each fighter.
  • Firearms, melee attacks and Persona skills can be used to control the battlefield and place enemies at a disadvantage.
  • The One More system grants additional action opportunities when certain conditions are met.
  • Triple Threat allows all three party members to attack enemies caught inside their triangular formation.
  • Each character has their own characteristics and a skill tree used to develop their abilities.
  • Personas add another layer of party customization and expand the available skill set.
  • Missions can require objectives other than defeating every enemy, increasing the importance of movement and team composition.
  • Erina joins the Phantom Thieves as a new ally and plays a central role in this story of revolution.

Conclusion

Persona 5 Tactica translates the principles of Persona 5 into a structure entirely focused on strategy.

Affinities, Personas and additional actions remain present, but they are now integrated into a system where cover, range and above all the positioning of the three fighters determine how each mission unfolds.

The game therefore preserves the identity of the Phantom Thieves while exploring a different form of turn-based RPG, built around coordination and battlefield control rather than the Palace exploration of the main game.
