Overview
Presentation
Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm is an action, adventure and fighting game developed by CyberConnect2 and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The first installment in the Ultimate Ninja Storm series, it adapts the universe of the original Naruto manga and anime, before the events of Naruto Shippuden. It marks a significant evolution from previous Ultimate Ninja games by replacing battles fought primarily on a two-dimensional plane with vast three-dimensional arenas. This new approach allows the acrobatic movements and spectacular techniques of the ninjas to be recreated in more open environments.
Combat revolves around freedom of movement around opponents. Characters can run along walls, move across water, dodge attacks and combine close-range strikes with chakra-powered ninjutsu techniques. Substitutions provide a way to escape certain attacks, while ninja weapons and items allow players to vary their approach. Each fighter also has Ultimate Jutsu, accompanied by cinematic sequences and interactive actions that recreate the presentation of battles from the anime.
The combat system incorporates several customization and teamwork options. Players select a main ninja, adjust certain techniques and assign up to two support characters. These allies intervene at specific moments to attack opponents, extend combos or create openings. The game also introduces Awakening transformations, which become available under certain combat conditions. They allow characters to temporarily change their attributes, appearance and sometimes their moves, reflecting the distinctive powers found throughout the Naruto universe.
Beyond combat, Ultimate Mission Mode offers an adventure centered on the first major stages of Naruto Uzumaki's journey. Players can freely explore the Hidden Leaf Village of Konoha, which serves as the main hub for activities, and access different environments associated with missions, including the Forest of Death. Exploring these areas provides opportunities to meet characters from the series, collect scrolls, purchase items and discover side activities. The village therefore acts as a progression hub connecting battles with the various missions available.
This campaign features more than one hundred missions, with objectives extending beyond traditional battles. Some require players to win duels, while others involve races, deliveries, movement challenges or special objectives. Major story events also lead to cinematic boss battles against gigantic opponents, accompanied by interactive sequences. Progression allows players to unlock new fighters, techniques, support characters and various additional features depending on the missions completed.
Finally, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm includes a Free Battle mode, where players can organize duels against the computer or challenge a second player locally. The roster features 25 playable characters from the original Naruto series, each with their own fighting styles and signature abilities. The cel-shaded art direction recreates the colors, expressions and movements of Japanese animation. By bringing together exploration, missions and arena battles, this first installment establishes the foundations of the combat system developed in subsequent games.

Good to know
Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm was originally released on November 4, 2008, for PlayStation 3. It was developed by CyberConnect2 and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It is the first installment in the Ultimate Ninja Storm series, which follows the earlier Naruto: Ultimate Ninja games.
Ultimate Mission Mode covers the major events of the original Naruto series, corresponding to the first 135 episodes of the anime. It features 101 missions, divided between battles, movement challenges and side activities. The adventure mainly takes place in the Hidden Leaf Village of Konoha, with several environments accessible during missions.
The original roster features 25 playable characters, including Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Sakura Haruno, Kakashi Hatake, Gaara, Rock Lee, Neji Hyuga and Itachi Uchiha. Characters have their own techniques, support abilities and, under certain conditions, Awakening transformations.
The combat system allows players to customize certain techniques and equipped items before battles. Ultimate Jutsu can trigger interactive sequences in which players must perform different button inputs. Awakening transformations temporarily modify a fighter's abilities and may provide access to new moves.
Following its launch, the game received several free downloadable content packs, including additional missions, support-only characters and costumes. These additions notably expanded team composition options without changing the game's main structure.
An HD remastered version was released on August 25, 2017, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. It is also included in the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy and Ultimate Ninja Storm Legacy collections. The Trilogy collection subsequently arrived on Nintendo Switch on April 26, 2018.
The game was also adapted for iOS and Android mobile devices in September 2024. This version features touchscreen controls, automatic saving and several quality-of-life adjustments. Unlike the console and PC editions, it is restricted to single-player gameplay.
The first Ultimate Ninja Storm features Japanese and English voice acting, alongside text and subtitles in several languages, including French and Spanish. Its multiplayer is limited to local two-player battles: unlike subsequent installments, it does not feature online combat.
