Synopsis

Gravity Rush 2

After being swept away by a gravitational anomaly, Kat and Syd find themselves far from Hekseville in the wandering mining settlement of Banga. Separated from Dusty and stripped of her powers, Kat must first adapt to this new life before gradually regaining her abilities. Her journey then leads her to Jirga Para Lhao, a vast floating city marked by deep social inequalities and new tensions. As she tries to understand the gravitational phenomena that carried her away from home, Kat reunites with Raven and becomes involved in a new conflict whose consequences extend far beyond the city itself.

Overview

Presentation

Gravity Rush 2 takes the central idea of the first game and expands it across a much larger world. Kat can still alter the direction of gravity to fall toward walls, ceilings, suspended islands or directly through the sky, but this ability is now joined by new ways to modify the strength of gravity itself.

The game introduces three gravity styles that Kat can switch between quickly. Normal Style retains the familiar behavior of the first game. Lunar Style reduces gravity's effect, making Kat lighter and more mobile while allowing longer jumps and more agile movement. By contrast, Jupiter Style increases her weight and emphasizes power, with heavier movement but attacks capable of dealing greater damage.

These styles are not used only in combat. They also change the way environments are explored. Lunar Style makes certain platforming sections and complex spaces easier to navigate, while Jupiter Style allows Kat to use momentum and weight differently. Switching between them therefore adds a new layer to the gravity manipulation already established in the first game.

Combat directly benefits from this evolution. Kat retains her ground attacks, gravity-based techniques, Gravity Kick and Stasis Field, which allows her to attract objects before launching them. Each style, however, introduces its own variations: Lunar favors speed and agility, while Jupiter turns certain attacks into much heavier strikes. Players can switch styles during the same battle to adapt their movements to an enemy's position and behavior.

Raven also takes on a larger role. Once a rival and now an ally, she can join Kat during certain battles and participate in coordinated attacks. This partnership develops a relationship already established in the first game while occasionally adding a cooperative element to combat.

Exploration expands mainly through Jirga Para Lhao, a huge floating metropolis made up of districts positioned at different altitudes. This layout gives the series' verticality a much greater scale: reaching a destination is not simply a matter of moving horizontally across the city, but often of traveling vast distances upward or downward between its different layers. The districts also feature contrasting social and visual identities that are reflected directly in their architecture and position within the city.

The Banga settlement, where the adventure begins, introduces another side of the world. This traveling community lives in part from the extraction of gravity ore. Kat can take part in expeditions into various mining areas, where she fights Nevi, collects gems and discovers useful items for progression. Some of these areas are tied to gravity rifts and offer environments distinct from the main urban spaces.

Talismans further expand customization. Obtained notably through mining activities, they can provide different effects and bonuses linked to Kat's abilities. Their use complements the gem-based upgrade system from the first game and allows for additional adjustment of her characteristics without changing the overall progression structure.

The world also features numerous side missions and challenges that use Kat's powers in different ways: timed traversal, combat, searching, photography or smaller stories centered on the people she meets. These activities give more presence to the different communities and allow exploration to serve purposes beyond simply traveling between main missions.

The art direction retains the combination of cel-shading and comic-book-inspired presentation from the first game. Story scenes still make use of panel-like compositions, while the larger scale of the cities allows the game to create more dramatic vertical vistas, layered architecture and strong contrasts between districts. Gravity manipulation therefore remains closely tied to the way the world is built and observed.

Key points

  • The gravity manipulation from the first game returns in a significantly larger world.
  • Kat now has three gravity styles: Normal, Lunar and Jupiter.
  • Lunar Style makes Kat lighter and more mobile, while Jupiter Style increases her weight and power.
  • The styles affect both movement and combat and can be switched depending on the situation.
  • The Gravity Kick, Stasis Field and other abilities from the first game are expanded through new variations.
  • Raven accompanies Kat during certain sequences and can take part in combined attacks.
  • Jirga Para Lhao offers highly vertical exploration across multiple suspended districts.
  • Mining areas allow players to collect gems and talismans while fighting creatures in distinct environments.
  • Talismans add another layer of customization to Kat's abilities.
  • Numerous side missions and challenges expand the inhabitants, exploration and mastery of gravity powers.
  • The presentation retains its cel-shaded style and comic-inspired visual direction.

Conclusion

Gravity Rush 2 develops the mechanic that defined its predecessor rather than simply reproducing it. Lunar and Jupiter Styles change both combat and traversal, giving players more ways to use the game's vertical environments.

This evolution is particularly effective in places such as Jirga Para Lhao, whose different levels and districts are designed to be crossed in every direction. Side missions, mining areas, talismans and occasional cooperation with Raven enrich the structure without distracting from the game's central idea: making gravity itself the main tool for movement, exploration and combat.

Good to know

Gravity Rush 2 was developed by SIE Japan Studio, within the Project Siren team, and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was directed by Keiichiro Toyama.

The game was released in 2017 exclusively for PlayStation 4 and is a direct sequel to Gravity Rush.

The music was once again composed by Kohei Tanaka, while the art direction retains the illustration- and comic-inspired visual identity of the first game.

An additional story focused on Raven, Raven's Choice, was released for free after launch and expands on events connected to the character.

Gravity Rush 2 also included several asynchronous community features involving challenges, photographs and treasure hunts. These online features were discontinued in July 2018; the single-player content remains playable.

This entry covers Gravity Rush 2, not the original Gravity Rush or its remastered version.
