Presentation
Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening is a prequel to the first game and focuses on the early rivalry between Dante and Vergil. The story gives much greater importance to Sparda’s legacy, while Lady and Arkham add a second family conflict that runs alongside the struggle between the twins.
The game also rebuilds the combat system after Devil May Cry 2. Enemies are more aggressive, close combat is once again central, and the style ranking rewards varied attacks, good positioning and the ability to maintain momentum.
Its main innovation is the Style system. Trickster emphasizes mobility and evasion, Swordmaster expands melee techniques, Gunslinger develops firearms, and Royalguard rewards precise defensive timing. Quicksilver and Doppelganger can later be unlocked as additional options.
Dante’s arsenal is considerably broader. Rebellion remains his main sword, but Cerberus, Agni & Rudra, Nevan and Beowulf each provide different attacks and rhythms. Firearms include Ebony & Ivory, the shotgun, Artemis, Spiral and Kalina Ann. Switching between equipped weapons allows much more varied combinations than in the previous games.
Devil Trigger is also integrated into the story. Dante begins without access to his demonic transformation and awakens it after his first major confrontation with Vergil, linking his mechanical progression directly to his personal development.
Temen-ni-gru combines combat with exploration, puzzles and environmental changes. Bosses frequently serve as both major challenges and sources of new weapons, while the recurring battles against Vergil provide clear milestones in Dante’s progression.
Vergil offers a direct contrast to Dante. His precise fighting style and obsession with power reflect his rejection of humanity, while Lady demonstrates the determination of an entirely human fighter. Their presence gradually forces Dante to decide what part of Sparda’s legacy he actually wants to inherit.
The result is the game that establishes much of the modern identity of Devil May Cry: fast combat, extensive player expression, multiple weapons, distinctive Styles and a much stronger emphasis on Dante and Vergil’s relationship.
What to remember
- A prequel showing a younger Dante before the first Devil May Cry.
- Vergil seeks Sparda’s power by opening the gateway beneath Temen-ni-gru.
- Lady hunts her father Arkham, whose manipulation drives much of the plot.
- The game introduces Trickster, Swordmaster, Gunslinger and Royalguard Styles.
- Dante can combine several Devil Arms and firearms to create much more varied combos.
- Cerberus, Agni & Rudra, Nevan and Beowulf are among the main Devil Arms.
- Dante awakens Devil Trigger during his conflict with Vergil.
- The final separation between the brothers leads Dante toward the creation of the Devil May Cry agency.
Conclusion
Devil May Cry 3 gives the series the combat identity that its first two games were still defining. The Style system, wider arsenal and more demanding enemies make experimentation and mechanical mastery central to the experience.
The story supports this progression through Dante and Vergil. Their rivalry is not limited to power: each brother represents a different response to their mixed human and demonic heritage. Lady adds an important human perspective that helps Dante understand the value Vergil refuses to recognize.
Some of its difficulty and level structure still reflect its era, but its combat remains remarkably flexible. Many ideas introduced here would continue to shape the series long afterward.
Beyond explaining the origins of Dante’s agency, Dante’s Awakening establishes the relationship, systems and tone that became the foundation of modern Devil May Cry.
