Overview
Presentation
Captain Tsubasa II: World Fighters is a football game combining action, sports and character progression, developed by Tamsoft Corporation and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. A sequel to Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions, it adapts the universe of Yōichi Takahashi's Captain Tsubasa manga and anime. The game returns to a real-time arcade football formula, built around the characters' extraordinary abilities, powerful shots and spectacular confrontations. This second installment expands the previous game's systems, particularly duels between attackers and defenders, coordinated techniques and goalkeeper interventions, while extending competitions to the international stage.
Story Mode continues the adventures of Tsubasa Ozora following the events of Rise of New Champions. Inspired by the manga's World Youth arc, it follows the Japanese national team on its journey toward the World Youth Championship. Players reunite with the series' major characters and face new teams, from the Asian qualifiers to encounters against international football powers. Teams from Thailand, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia and China are among the opponents in the qualifying rounds, while national teams such as Brazil, Argentina, the Netherlands and Mexico take part in the world tournament. Matches are accompanied by dialogue, cinematic sequences and special events inspired by the manga.
The narrative also features several complementary story routes. Legendary and Advanced modes develop alternative scenarios and original confrontations supervised by Yōichi Takahashi. Rivals Mode explores side stories focusing on footballers from different nations and their preparations for major competitions. Meanwhile, New Stars Route allows players to create their own footballer and join the Japanese national team alongside Tsubasa. This personalized campaign combines international matches with individual progression, featuring relationships to develop and new techniques to acquire.
On the pitch, World Fighters retains the foundations of arcade football while expanding the available actions. Players can chain together passes, dribbles, tackles and charged shots, alongside new super techniques specific to different positions. Forwards have access to spectacular strikes, midfielders can perform enhanced passes and dribbles, while defenders use distinctive tackles and blocks. Max Actions allow players to unleash powerful offensive and defensive moves, but their effectiveness depends on timing and the opponent's reaction. Managing stamina and direct confrontations therefore plays an important role throughout matches.
The Chain System is one of the main new features. By successfully performing consecutive dribbles, passes and special actions, players increase their chain level, progressively strengthening their shots and reducing the time needed to charge them. This progression encourages building coordinated attacks rather than immediately attempting a decisive strike. However, losing possession interrupts the accumulated chain. Miracle Actions can also occur when certain conditions are met, triggering exceptional events capable of changing the course of a match.
Duels between shooters and goalkeepers feature a completely redesigned system. The attacking player can choose between six shooting directions, while the goalkeeper must anticipate the trajectory to make a save. The effectiveness of a shot depends notably on its power, trajectory and distance from the goal. Goalkeepers possess a stamina gauge, which gradually decreases when stopping opposing shots. When a strike deals sufficient damage to this resistance, it can trigger a Break, permanently reducing the goalkeeper's maximum stamina for the remainder of the match. Super Shots and special saving techniques therefore create confrontations in which anticipation and the construction of scoring opportunities play an essential role.
Character creation allows players to customize the appearance, attributes and techniques of an original footballer. In New Stars Route, the player develops their abilities by participating in matches and strengthening relationships with iconic characters from the series. These bonds provide access to new techniques and additional narrative events. The customization system also allows players to modify the moves and skills associated with their chosen position, including goalkeepers. Team editing features then allow players to bring together different footballers and organize their formations according to the requirements of each match.
Beyond the campaigns, Captain Tsubasa II: World Fighters includes Versus matches, a Training Mode and multiplayer features. Players can challenge an opponent locally or participate in online encounters, including competitive matches. With 22 national teams, more than 110 playable characters and over 150 animations for spectacular techniques and actions, the game significantly expands the available matchups. Teams from the manga, original squads and several club or school teams complement the international roster, allowing players to revisit Captain Tsubasa's rivalries through a variety of competitions and customized matches.
