Synopsis

Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon

Six hundred years before Bayonetta’s later adventures, Cereza is still a timid young girl living under the strict supervision of Morgana, her teacher. Born from the forbidden union of a Lumen Sage and an Umbra Witch, she grows up bearing the consequences of that transgression: her father was banished and her mother imprisoned.

Determined to become stronger and free her mother, Cereza follows the guidance of a mysterious boy who appears in her dreams and ventures into the forbidden Avalon Forest. Attacked by faeries deep within the woods, she desperately attempts a demon-summoning ritual.

The summoned demon becomes bound to Cereza’s stuffed cat. She names him Cheshire and, despite their difficult relationship, the two must join forces to survive the enchanted forest.

Overview

Overview

Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon deliberately moves away from the hack-and-slash structure of the main games to build its adventure around cooperation between two characters controlled simultaneously. Cereza provides magic while Cheshire uses demonic strength, and progression through Avalon Forest regularly requires coordinating their abilities rather than using them separately.

Developed by PlatinumGames and published by Nintendo, the game was released on March 17, 2023. The listed platform is Nintendo Switch. The associated genres are action, adventure, fantasy and puzzle. The specified mode is Single player.

The control system directly splits the two protagonists between the two sides of the controller. Cereza is controlled with the left side, while Cheshire responds to the right side. This setup allows both characters to move or act almost in parallel and forms the basis of both combat and puzzles.

Cereza is not designed as a physical fighter comparable to the adult Bayonetta. Her magic notably allows her to bind enemies with thorns, transform certain environmental elements with Witch Pulse and dispel illusions. She can also use different items and potions to support the pair.

Cheshire provides the offensive power. His claws allow him to attack faeries, break certain obstacles and open paths that Cereza could not clear on her own. In combat, immobilizing an enemy with Cereza before attacking it with Cheshire therefore becomes one of the basic forms of cooperation between the two characters.

The demon can also return inside the stuffed toy through Hug Mode. Cereza then carries Cheshire in this form and can stretch or throw him toward certain points. This mechanic directly affects exploration and makes it possible to reach places that require changing the distance between the two characters.

Avalon Forest functions as an exploration space gradually opened up by the duo’s new abilities. Some obstacles require Cereza’s magic, others Cheshire’s strength, while several passages demand that their respective abilities be used successively or simultaneously.

Throughout the adventure, Cheshire gains different elemental forms. These grant him new abilities that can be used both in combat and to overcome obstacles and reach new parts of the forest. Progression therefore expands exploration possibilities rather than simply increasing attack power.

The Tír na nÓg are special spaces built around the forest’s illusions. They offer sequences in which the duo’s coordination is tested through puzzles and specific battles, making use of the mechanics learned during exploration.

Character development also uses a skill tree. Certain materials collected in the forest can be used to strengthen existing abilities or acquire new ones. Specific elements can also increase certain characteristics, including Cereza’s maximum health.

Exploration therefore encourages attention to side paths and interactive elements. Resources, upgrades and additional routes give detours a purpose, while Cheshire’s new forms can make previously inaccessible areas reachable.

The visual direction takes the form of an illustrated storybook, with painted environments and staging that evokes the turning pages of a fairy tale. This presentation supports the game’s change in perspective: the story focuses on Cereza long before she becomes the witch known as Bayonetta.

This visual identity is directly reflected in the gameplay. Where the main entries rely on speed, long combo chains and dodging, Bayonetta Origins asks the player to divide their attention between two characters, understand the properties of the environment and combine complementary actions.

Key takeaways

  • The adventure takes place six hundred years before Bayonetta’s later exploits and follows Cereza while she is still an apprentice.
  • Cereza and Cheshire are controlled simultaneously using both sides of the controller.
  • Cereza notably uses her magic to immobilize enemies, transform the environment and dispel illusions.
  • Cheshire provides demonic strength for combat and for opening certain paths.
  • Hug Mode allows Cheshire to return to Cereza’s stuffed toy and plays a direct role in puzzles.
  • Cheshire gains different elemental forms that expand his combat and exploration abilities.
  • The Tír na nÓg test the duo’s coordination through puzzles and battles.
  • A skill tree allows Cereza and Cheshire’s abilities to develop progressively.

Conclusion

Bayonetta Origins builds its system around the mutual dependence of its two protagonists. Cereza has the magical tools needed to control certain situations and affect the environment, while Cheshire provides the strength and offensive abilities she lacks.

The simultaneous control gives this complementarity a direct gameplay expression. Progression, combat and puzzles regularly require actions to be divided between both characters rather than treating Cheshire as a simple summon.

The elemental forms, Hug Mode and upgrades gradually expand this relationship and open new possibilities within Avalon Forest. The game therefore defines its own mechanics while using Cereza’s youth to explore a period before her identity as Bayonetta.
