After the events of The Long Halloween, Gotham remains deeply scarred by the fall of its major crime families and the rise of costumed criminals. Batman investigates a new series of murders targeting police officers and former members of law enforcement, while a mysterious killer known as Hangman appears determined to continue the chaos left behind by Holiday. At the same time, Bruce Wayne crosses paths with young Dick Grayson, whose life has also been shattered by tragedy. As the investigation closes in on Gotham’s old wounds, Batman must confront his own limits and learn that he may not be able to fight this war alone.

Issue 2
In this second volume, Le Jeu du Pendu continues: corpses are piled up in the alleys of a Gotham that is increasingly in panic. Even the police are not safe. Inspector John Flass, a venal and corrupt man wearing a Gotham police plate, is found dead near the door of a lupanar. Issue 4
Since the Roman's death, it has been panic in Gotham. The mafia has been disorganized and corpses are piled up in the dark streets of the city. The police and Batman are chasing a serial killer, the mysterious Pendu who leaves on the corpse of his victims sybillins messages whose key remains a mystery. Janice Porter, prosecutor, decides to reopen the Roman's file. In doing so, she stirs up the troubled waters of Gotham's past, awakening ghosts who were only asking to stay asleep. Between Batman and the police, two forms of justice are then opposed. Things are still complicated when Bruce Wayne welcomes under his roof a young boy, Dick Grayson, whose parents have just perished after an unexplained fall. This young trapezist, lost in a world where he has grown too quickly, reminds Bruce of the orphan who, years ago, has sworn revenge for death to Thomas and Martha Wayne, and to bring justice to the cruel streets of Gotham.
