Dyssery refuses the marriage her family has arranged for her and chooses a radical way to escape her future husband: taking her own life. She then finds herself in the Valley of Shadows, a realm where the dead continue a strange existence that is freer but also filled with dangers and disturbing creatures. There, Dyssery finally discovers the possibility of becoming an actress, a dream that was forbidden to her while she was alive. But Phorée, her husband, refuses to let her go and sets out on a journey to the realm of the dead to bring her back, turning her escape into an adventure about freedom, fantasy, and resistance against convention.
