Burning Spear, born Winston Rodney, is a Jamaican singer and songwriter who became one of the major figures of roots reggae from the 1970s onward. His music is defined by deep rhythms, a strong spiritual dimension and lyrics focused on African history, Black identity, Rastafarianism and the legacy of Marcus Garvey. With albums such as Marcus Garvey, Man in the Hills and Social Living, Burning Spear became one of the most important and enduring voices in Jamaican reggae.
