Volume 1
4 August 1977, village of Yonaki. In this small mountain hamlet cut off from the rest of the world, a teenager receives a black envelope. Inside, an invitation to a mysterious "play of the King" accompanied by a first macabre challenge: all the inhabitants of the village of Yonaki aged 10 to 20 will have to touch a human corpse before the end of the day under full of punishment by the King... For the 32 villagers, this is the beginning of a deadly failure against an invisible and all-powerful enemy!
Volume 2
After the first deaths, a second black envelope arrives in Yonaki, carrying a new order. Thanks to Ryûji's sacrifice, the mission seems to have been accomplished, but three of the hornets captured for the King die shortly before midnight... And the next morning, the bodies of three villagers are found cut into pieces! As the hamlet gets panicked, Kazunari and his friends decide to talk about the King's game to adults, who do not take them seriously. As for the police, it is unable to identify the culprit. It is then that a third letter is discovered: it orders every resident to burn the sum of 100,000 yen, under penalty of death...
Volume 3
The list of the King's victims continues to lie down: the police once again demonstrate their impotence when Kazunari is ordered to appoint a villager who will be condemned to beheading! Drawn by lot, Hisako Nakamura dies immediately in front of the whole village... As the terrified inhabitants begin to lose hope, the ruthless game resumes with the arrival of a fifth letter prohibiting the commission of a 'unnecessary act'. When Kazunari understands that to say the evil of the King is to sign his death sentence, it is already too late: there are only 12 people still alive in Yonaki... And the nightmare is not over, because a sixth order falls!
