In “On the Brevity of Life,” Seneca the Younger explores the timeless themes of time and wisdom. This philosophical text, written in the form of an essay, is addressed to his friend Paulinus, to whom Seneca gives advice on how to live fully. The author develops the idea that human life, often perceived as too short, is in reality long enough if used well. Seneca criticizes inaction, procrastination and the incessant pursuit of futile pleasures, which distract man from what is essential. Rather, it encourages the quest for wisdom and virtue, which alone can lead to a fulfilled and meaningful existence. Drawing on examples from daily life and Roman history, Seneca demonstrates that it is not the number of years that counts, but the way in which they are lived. This text, although written almost two millennia ago, still resonates today with its relevance and depth. It invites the modern reader to reflect on their own priorities and to re-evaluate what constitutes a fulfilled life. The complete edition augmented by appendices offers additional insight into the historical and philosophical context of the work, thus enriching the reading experience and the understanding of Seneca's ideas.
