The Rhetoric is a foundational text in many respects. In addition to the capital interest it presents for specialists in ancient Greek civilization, it constitutes a mine of information and questions for theorists of language, for historians or practitioners of what we today call “communication”. But its interest is above all philosophical. Recognize the importance of persuasion in social and political relationships, as an alternative to violence and to satisfy what is human in man; recognizing in persuasion the unavoidable presence of opinion (doxa), analyzing its mechanisms, introducing rationality without ignoring either its powers or its prestige, such is the enterprise of knowledge, lucidity and progress to which Aristotle invites us. Who would deny its burning news?
