Chloe Frazer travels to India in search of the legendary Tusk of Ganesh, an artifact connected to the ancient Hoysala Empire. For the expedition, she joins forces with Nadine Ross, the former leader of a paramilitary organization who has since become a mercenary.

Their trail leads them from conflict-torn streets to the Western Ghats, where temples, fortresses and ruins conceal traces left behind by the Hoysala civilization.

Chloe and Nadine must find the artifact before Asav, a warlord who is also seeking it, while learning to work together despite their different methods and motivations.

Overview

Overview

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is the first standalone entry in the series to build its entire adventure without Nathan Drake as the protagonist. Chloe Frazer leads the expedition, accompanied by Nadine Ross, as they search for the Tusk of Ganesh in a region marked by the history of the ancient Hoysala Empire.

Developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, the game was released on August 22, 2017 for PlayStation 4. It is a standalone adventure: owning Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is not required to play it.

The change of protagonist does not alter the foundations of the series. Climbing, gunfights, stealth, environmental puzzles, hidden treasures and large-scale action sequences remain central to progression, but The Lost Legacy expands several ideas introduced in Uncharted 4.

The Western Ghats of India are the main example of this evolution. A significant part of the adventure takes place in a large area that Chloe and Nadine can explore more freely, either on foot or behind the wheel of a 4x4.

A map that can be consulted directly during exploration helps players navigate the region without relying on permanent on-screen markers. Temples, fortresses, ruins and side paths are distributed throughout the environment, giving the player more freedom in the order in which certain discoveries are made.

This openness nevertheless remains integrated into a narrative adventure. The Lost Legacy does not adopt a fully open-world structure: its larger exploration areas are placed between more directed sequences, puzzles, combat encounters and the cinematic scenes characteristic of the series.

The grappling hook, already present in Uncharted 4, plays an important role in Chloe’s movement. It allows her to swing between structures, reach certain platforms and also features in several puzzles based on navigation and the environment.

Combat also expands the possibilities offered by stealth. Tall grass and the more open design of some arenas make it possible to approach groups of enemies from several directions, bypass certain encounters or gradually move from a stealthy approach into direct combat.

Chloe notably has access to a silenced pistol, presented as the first lethal stealth weapon of its kind in the series. C4 explosives complement this arsenal and can be used to prepare certain encounters or disrupt enemy positions.

A new lockpicking mechanic also allows certain locked crates to be opened. They can contain weapons or rarer equipment, giving exploration of combat areas additional value before or during an encounter.

Nadine accompanies Chloe through much of the adventure and takes an active role in combat. Their partnership therefore serves more than the narrative: her presence also contributes to traversal, encounters and various interactions throughout exploration.

The Indian setting plays an important role in the puzzles and architecture. Temples, sculptures and mechanisms draw on the heritage of the Hoysala Empire and stories connected to Ganesh, giving Chloe’s expedition an identity distinct from the series’ previous journeys.

On PlayStation 4 Pro, the game also benefits from increased resolution and HDR support with compatible equipment.

The original edition also provides access to the Multiplayer and Survival modes from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. The Lost Legacy’s own adventure nevertheless remains structured as an independent single-player campaign.

The Lost Legacy therefore retains Uncharted’s cinematic rhythm while shifting several of its balances. Chloe and Nadine replace Nathan at the center of the story, exploration becomes more flexible in the Western Ghats, and stealth, traversal and equipment searching take on a greater role during gameplay.

Key takeaways

  • Chloe Frazer becomes the main protagonist, accompanied by Nadine Ross.
  • Their expedition takes them to India in search of the Tusk of Ganesh.
  • The Western Ghats feature a large area that can be explored on foot or by 4x4.
  • A map helps players navigate and organize the exploration of several locations.
  • The grappling hook is used for traversal, climbing and certain puzzles.
  • Combat allows greater flexibility between stealth, bypassing enemies and direct confrontation.
  • Chloe can use a silenced pistol, C4 and lockpick certain crates containing equipment.
  • The game is a standalone adventure and does not require ownership of Uncharted 4.

Conclusion

The Lost Legacy retains Uncharted’s main systems but reorganizes them around a new protagonist and more open spaces. The Western Ghats notably allow the player to temporarily move away from strictly linear progression, choose routes more freely and explore several locations by 4x4.

This freedom also affects combat encounters. Arenas provide more opportunities to flank enemies, use stealth or search for equipment before engaging, while the grappling hook continues to broaden traversal options.

The most visible change remains the focus on Chloe and Nadine. Their partnership allows the series to retain its archaeological adventure structure while developing a story independent of Nathan Drake and centered on a different relationship between explorers.
