Overview
Presentation
Star Fox is an aerial action and shooting game developed for Nintendo Switch 2. It is a remake of Lylat Wars, known as Star Fox 64 outside Europe, and revisits its campaign while completely rebuilding its presentation and adding new game modes.
The player takes the role of Fox McCloud, leader of the Star Fox mercenary team. Alongside Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad and Peppy Hare, he travels across the Lylat system to repel the forces of Dr. Andross and reach his base on Venom.
Most missions take place at the controls of the Arwing, a fighter capable of barrel rolls, loops and other fast maneuvers while facing enemy squadrons and large bosses.
Certain missions, however, switch vehicles. The Landmaster allows ground combat in a light tank, while the Blue-Marine takes Fox underwater during specific sequences.
The campaign retains one of the defining principles of Lylat Wars: its alternate route system. The way a mission is completed can change the next destination and lead to different planets, objectives or situations.
A single playthrough therefore does not necessarily reveal all of the content. Replaying the campaign and meeting certain conditions opens new paths through the Lylat system and reveals different parts of the story.
This new version also expands the Star Fox team through new cutscenes, including additional mission briefings.
Several difficulty levels allow the experience to be adjusted. Easy Mode notably increases shield durability and removes some penalties related to laser power.
A Challenge Mode allows campaign missions to be replayed with new objectives, giving the stages additional uses beyond the main progression.
The game offers several control methods. Traditional controls remain available, but one Joy-Con 2 can also be used as a mouse for direct aiming, independently from certain ship maneuvers.
The campaign and Challenge Mode can also be played in two-player local co-op, with one player handling piloting and the other controlling aiming and shooting.
Finally, a Battle Mode offers four-versus-four online multiplayer, notably pitting Star Fox against Star Wolf across different objectives.
