Synopsis

Sea of Thieves

In the Sea of Thieves, pirates seeking fortune and renown sail between isolated islands, outposts and dangerous waters. Each crew can chart its own course, take on Voyages offered by different companies, search for treasure, fight cursed skeletons or explore the legends surrounding the archipelago. But these seas are also crossed by other crews: an encounter may lead to an improvised alliance, a cautious exchange or a battle over hard-earned loot. Through these adventures, every pirate gradually builds a reputation and follows the path that may eventually lead to becoming a Pirate Legend.

Overview

Presentation

Sea of Thieves lets players become pirates in a vast maritime world shared with other players. Rather than following a linear campaign with a fixed route, the game places the crew aboard its ship and leaves it free to decide how to spend each voyage: search for treasure, take on a mission, explore an island, fight creatures, pursue another crew or simply sail toward the unknown.

Sailing is one of the foundations of the experience. A ship is not controlled from a single interface: players must raise and angle the sails, steer the helm, consult the map, watch the horizon and repair damage when the hull is hit. On ships carrying several pirates, these tasks can be divided among the crew. A storm, boarding attempt or naval battle can therefore force everyone to react quickly, moving between maneuvering, cannon fire, repairs and bailing out water flooding the lower decks.

Several ship types allow this organization to adapt to the size of the crew. It is possible to set sail alone, but much of the game's structure naturally revolves around cooperation. Sailing with others means sharing responsibilities, communicating and choosing a destination together, while also improvising whenever the voyage takes an unexpected turn.

The world consists of a vast ocean scattered with islands, outposts, shipwrecks and places to explore. Travel is not separated from activities by transition screens: leaving port, spotting an island, sailing toward it and disembarking are all part of the same journey. Weather, dangers encountered at sea and especially the presence of other crews mean that every crossing can unfold differently.

Voyages provide a more structured direction for adventure. Associated in particular with the different Trading Companies, they may involve following treasure maps, solving riddles, fighting enemies or transporting cargo. Reputation earned with these organizations gradually opens access to other activities and supports the journey toward becoming a Pirate Legend.

Progression is largely based on reputation, commendations and customization rather than on permanently accumulating more powerful equipment. Basic tools remain available to pirates, while rewards mainly allow players to alter the appearance of their character, weapons or ship. This structure avoids mechanically separating a newcomer from an experienced player through ever-increasing equipment statistics.

Encounters with other players are an essential part of this structure. Two ships may ignore one another, cooperate temporarily, form an alliance or immediately engage in battle. A crew carrying several chests keeps its loot physically aboard until it is sold, so spotting another ship on the return journey can turn a successful expedition into a fight to protect everything that has been found.

Naval combat also demands a particular kind of coordination. Cannons must be loaded and aimed, the ship positioned correctly and damage repaired during the fight. Pirates can also leave their own vessel to board an enemy ship, combining battles at sea with direct combat using cutlasses and firearms.

Alongside this open structure are the Tall Tales, story-driven adventures built around puzzles, exploration and narrative sequences. They offer a more guided way to discover the world and its legends without replacing the freedom of the rest of the game.

Key points

  • An open-world action-adventure game built entirely around the pirate experience.
  • Sailing requires the crew to actively manage sails, helm, map, cannons and repairs.
  • An open structure that lets players choose their own objectives and routes.
  • Voyages involving treasure hunting, riddles, combat and cargo transport.
  • Several Trading Companies with which players can build reputation.
  • Progression focused mainly on reputation, commendations and cosmetic rewards rather than constantly increasing equipment power.
  • Naval combat combining maneuvering, cannon fire, repairs and boarding.
  • Encounters between crews can lead to cooperation, alliances or PvP.
  • Tall Tales provide more narrative-focused adventures within the open world.
  • The game was designed as an evolving title and has received many content expansions since launch.

Conclusion

Sea of Thieves builds its adventure around a relatively simple idea: give players a ship, an ocean and enough interconnected systems for their own stories to emerge from the voyage. Searching for a chest or completing a Voyage provides an objective, but a storm, a creature or the sudden appearance of another crew can completely change what was supposed to be an ordinary expedition.

This freedom works alongside progression that values experience, reputation and customization more than the constant pursuit of increasingly powerful gear. Cooperation and confrontation therefore rely on the same basic tools, while the shared world makes other pirates just as important to the adventure as the missions themselves.

Good to know

Sea of Thieves was developed by Rare and published by Xbox Game Studios. It was originally released on March 20, 2018 for Windows and Xbox One.

The game uses Unreal Engine 4 and is played from a first-person perspective.

Native versions for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 were later released in 2024, expanding the game's presence beyond its original platforms.

Sea of Thieves operates as a live-service game: since launch, Rare has continued to expand its world with new activities, stories, systems and events. This entry therefore focuses on the game's enduring foundations rather than cataloguing every season or temporary piece of content.
