Synopsis

Need for Speed Unbound

After Rydell's garage is robbed, two once-inseparable friends go their separate ways and a particularly valuable car disappears. Two years later, the player returns to Lakeshore's street-racing scene with a new goal: rebuild the garage, earn enough money to enter the weekly qualifiers and reach The Grand. Between rivalries, bets, police pursuits and a reunion with Yaz, this climb to the top is meant to recover the lost car and establish the player at the summit of the city's automotive scene.

Overview

Presentation

Need for Speed Unbound is an open-world racing game developed by Criterion Games. It brings the series back to street racing, tuning and police pursuits in the fictional city of Lakeshore.

The campaign begins after the robbery of Rydell's garage, an event that separates the player's character from their friend Yaz. Two years later, The Grand, Lakeshore's biggest underground racing competition, offers a chance to return to the top and recover a stolen car.

The main progression spans four weeks. Each week requires the player to earn enough money to pay the entry fee for a qualifier, upgrade the garage and prepare cars that match the required classes.

Racing strongly revolves around a risk-and-reward structure. Money earned during a session can be used to enter new events, place side bets against rivals or develop vehicles.

Activities also increase the Heat level. The higher it becomes, the more powerful police units are deployed to pursue the player throughout Lakeshore.

Pursuits can be escaped by creating distance, using the environment or staying hidden long enough to lose the police. Getting busted can cause the player to lose part of the money accumulated during the session.

Driving supports several approaches between grip and drift, complemented by Burst Nitrous. This additional boost reserve is charged notably through drifting, drafting, jumps and other driving actions.

Customization plays a central role. Cars can receive new mechanical parts, body kits, wheels, paintwork, liveries and sometimes particularly radical visual modifications.

Unbound also stands out through its visual identity. Vehicles retain a relatively realistic appearance, while characters and certain driving effects use an aesthetic inspired by graffiti and illustration.

These effects, notably known as Tags, can appear around the vehicle during acceleration, drifting and other actions. Several visual elements can be customized depending on the desired style.

Lakeshore Online evolved considerably after release with new activities such as Linkups, Drift and Drag, PvP competitions, confrontations between police and racers and eventually Lockdown, a PvPvE mode built around risk and extraction.

The nine Volumes released after launch then greatly expanded Lakeshore Online with new modes and systems, gradually turning Unbound into a much richer experience than it was at release.

Good to know

Need for Speed Unbound is developed by Criterion Games and published by Electronic Arts.

The game was released on December 2, 2022 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

The solo campaign follows a four-week progression, with each week leading to a qualifier required to eventually enter The Grand.

The game features a large selection of cars from different manufacturers, expanded after release with several new models and customized versions.

The online mode received nine major Volumes of content between 2023 and 2024.

Volume 7: Drift & Drag notably reintroduced dedicated drift and drag modes, with handling specifically reworked for these activities.

Volume 8: Cops vs. Racers expanded confrontations between police and racers, drawing inspiration notably from Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

Volume 9: Lockdown introduced a PvPvE mode in which several crews must recover vehicles, face other players and the police, then reach an extraction truck before the playable zone gradually closes.

Lockdown also allows players to use the BMW S 1000 RR, the first rideable motorcycle in Need for Speed history, in compatible activities.

Volume 9 also celebrates the legacy of Need for Speed: Most Wanted, notably with several vehicles inspired by the Blacklist and the BMW M3 GTR associated with that game.

The Ultimate Collection bundles the game with a large portion of the Premium content released after launch, including several customizable vehicles, Custom cars and additional cosmetic items.

In February 2025, the Kaizen team announced the end of new Unbound updates in order to join Criterion's other teams working on Battlefield.

The game remains available and its online features are still accessible, but no new content Volume is planned following the end of the Kaizen program.

This entry focuses on Lakeshore, the campaign toward The Grand, police pursuits, tuning, the visual style and the main developments of Lakeshore Online, without detailing every car, event or Volume.
