Overview

Presentation

Metal Gear Survive is a spin-off that reuses several systems from Metal Gear Solid V and reshapes them around survival, resource gathering and construction. Its story begins at the end of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, before quickly branching into an alternate reality created by mysterious wormholes.

The player controls a former Mother Base soldier sent into a distorted wasteland where buildings, military equipment and infrastructure from different origins remain scattered across the environment. The first objective is simply to stay alive while searching for a way to understand this world and escape from it.

Survival requires careful management of several basic needs. Players must find food and water, explore the surrounding areas and collect the materials required to craft equipment.

Crafting therefore plays a central role. Gathered resources are used to create weapons, tools, defensive devices and different types of equipment needed to explore increasingly dangerous zones.

The player also develops a base camp. New facilities, crops and animals can be added over time, gradually improving the group's self-sufficiency and production capabilities.

Combat combines stealth with encounters against hostile creatures. Mechanics inherited from Metal Gear Solid V remain present, but are supplemented by melee weapons, barricades and different devices used to control enemy movement.

Some situations rely more on preparing a defensive position than on traditional infiltration. Setting up defenses, choosing where to place an obstacle or conserving resources can become just as important as combat accuracy.

Familiar elements from Metal Gear also return, including Walker Gears and Fulton balloons, reused here within this new survival-focused context.

Alongside the campaign, Metal Gear Survive includes an online co-op mode for up to four players. Participants must coordinate their defenses and survive multiple waves of creatures while protecting their objectives.

Rewards earned in co-op can then contribute to overall progression, creating a link between multiplayer activities and the campaign.

Conclusion

Metal Gear Survive uses the technical foundations and several mechanics of Metal Gear Solid V to create an experience that differs significantly from the rest of the series.

Stealth remains part of the formula, but now shares the spotlight with resource management, equipment crafting and the development of a camp capable of supporting the player over time.

Its alternate-reality story allows the game to move away from the main Metal Gear timeline and focus instead on a survival structure where exploration, preparation and cooperation become the central elements.
