Synopsis

Mario & Luigi: Brothership

When a mysterious portal opens in the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario, Luigi and many of its residents are swept away to Concordia, a world once united by the great Uni-Tree before a dark force shattered it into islands drifting across a vast ocean.

Aboard Shipshape Island, a mobile island that serves as their new base, the two brothers meet Connie and Snoutlet. They then set out to reunite the scattered lands by searching for each island’s lighthouse in order to reconnect it to their new home.

During their journey, Mario and Luigi discover that a sinister power is spreading isolation across Concordia. They must rely on their brotherly bond in an attempt to bring this fragmented world back together.

Overview

Overview

Developed by ACQUIRE Corp. and published by Nintendo, Mario & Luigi: Brothership is a video game released on November 7, 2024 for Nintendo Switch. The associated genres are action, adventure, comedy, fantasy, RPG and platforming. The specified game mode is Single player and the engine listed in this entry is Unreal Engine 5.

The adventure mainly takes place in Concordia, a world fragmented into numerous islands separated by the ocean. Shipshape Island, a structure that functions as both an island and a ship, serves as Mario and Luigi’s mobile base during their exploration.

Travel between the different regions relies on ocean currents. From Shipshape Island, the player can scan the horizon, choose a destination and use its cannon to launch Mario and Luigi toward discovered islands.

Each island has its own environment, inhabitants, obstacles and puzzles. The main objective generally consists of reaching its lighthouse and then reconnecting it to the Uni-Tree, gradually restoring the isolated territories to Concordia.

The islands can also change after being reconnected. Returning to certain areas can therefore reveal changes or provide access to new situations, while discovering major lighthouses gradually opens access to additional regions.

Exploration relies heavily on controlling the two brothers together. Mario and Luigi each have actions assigned to specific buttons, both for movement and for interacting with the environments.

Bros. Moves directly make use of their cooperation. They provide access to specific abilities that can be used to cross certain obstacles, reach otherwise inaccessible areas or solve situations built around their coordinated movements.

Luigi can also act more independently in certain situations thanks to his Luigi Logic. These moments provide particular solutions to some of the problems encountered during exploration or in specific situations.

Battles use a turn-based combat system. Mario and Luigi can attack with jumps or hammers, while well-timed button presses strengthen their attacks.

The same principle also applies to defense. Watching enemy movements and performing the appropriate action at the right moment allows certain attacks to be dodged instead of simply taking damage.

Bros. Attacks are more elaborate techniques based on cooperation between Mario and Luigi. Executing them requires several synchronized actions, making timing a central part of their effectiveness.

Battle Plugs add a layer of customization to combat. Depending on which ones are equipped, they can strengthen certain attacks, improve defensive capabilities, provide items or trigger different additional effects.

These Plugs, however, have a limited number of uses before needing to recharge. Their design therefore encourages players to adapt equipped combinations to the enemies and situations they encounter rather than relying on the same effects continuously.

Progression also retains traditional RPG characteristics: battles allow Mario and Luigi to develop, while equipment and different support systems modify their capabilities over the course of the adventure.

The game uses a fully 3D presentation while preserving the exaggerated expressions, physical comedy and humorous tone associated with the Mario & Luigi series. The environments are also built in three dimensions, with routes combining movement, light platforming, puzzles and battles.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership therefore structures its progression around a cycle combining navigation, discovering an island, exploration, battles and reconnection to Shipshape Island. Both movement and combat systems continually use the complementary abilities of Mario and Luigi as their central principle.

Key takeaways

  • The adventure takes place in Concordia, a world fragmented into islands drifting across several seas.
  • Shipshape Island serves as a mobile base and allows travel between the different destinations.
  • Each island features a lighthouse that must be reconnected to the Uni-Tree to help reunite Concordia.
  • Bros. Moves allow Mario and Luigi to combine their abilities during exploration.
  • Battles take place in turns, with timed actions used to strengthen attacks or dodge enemy strikes.
  • Bros. Attacks rely on coordinated sequences between the two characters.
  • Battle Plugs modify the duo’s capabilities through different effects with a limited number of uses.

Conclusion

Mario & Luigi: Brothership builds its progression around the islands of Concordia and Shipshape Island, linking navigation, exploration and the gradual reconnection of the different regions.

The two-character structure remains central to the adventure. Bros. Moves are used for traversal and puzzles, while battles require Mario and Luigi to coordinate in order to strengthen attacks, dodge incoming strikes and perform Bros. Attacks.

Battle Plugs complete this system by allowing players to adapt the effects available during combat, with their uses and recharge cycles also needing to be managed.

The game therefore combines RPG structure, light platforming, island exploration and turn-based combat in an adventure whose mechanics directly rely on the complementary abilities of Mario and Luigi.
