Overview
Presentation
GUILTY GEAR Xrd -REVELATOR- is a fighting game developed by Arc System Works and the direct sequel to Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-.
It retains the distinctive 2.5D presentation of the Xrd series: characters are fully rendered in 3D cel-shaded models, while animations, poses and camera changes are designed to reproduce the look of hand-drawn anime.
Battles are built around a fast system combining aerial movement, normal attacks, special moves, throws and numerous combo possibilities.
The Tension Gauge notably allows the use of Overdrives and different forms of Roman Cancel, which can interrupt an action in order to extend a combo, make an attack safer or immediately alter a situation.
The Burst Gauge provides an important defensive resource. Psych Burst can push the opponent away and escape certain offensive situations, making timing an important part of its use.
Dust attacks also create specific opportunities, including launching the opponent to continue with an aerial combo.
Revelator expands the Xrd roster with the return or arrival of Johnny, Jack-O', Jam Kuradoberi, Kum Haehyun, Raven and Dizzy, bringing the total to up to 23 fighters with the additional characters included.
Each character plays very differently. Some focus on direct pressure, while others rely on space control, projectiles, traps, unusual movement options or their own unique resources.
The game places strong emphasis on learning. Tutorial teaches the fundamentals through an interactive approach, while Mission, Combo and Training modes allow players to progressively work on universal systems and character-specific techniques.
The Story Mode directly continues the narrative of Xrd -SIGN-. It mainly takes the form of a long cinematic sequence without mandatory player-controlled battles, while individual episodes and Arcade mode further develop each character's personal story.

Good to know
GUILTY GEAR Xrd -REVELATOR- is developed by Arc System Works.
The console version launched in 2016 for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, with a European release on June 10, 2016.
The PC version via Steam launched on December 14, 2016.
The game can be played solo, in local multiplayer and online.
The Revelator roster reaches 23 fighters when including additional characters Kum Haehyun, Raven and Dizzy.
Stylish Mode simplifies certain inputs to make special attacks and combos more accessible to newcomers, while Technical Mode retains the traditional control scheme.
Story Mode also includes a summary of previous events, designed to make Guilty Gear's complex universe easier to follow.
Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, released in 2017, is not a completely separate entry: it is an enhanced version and expansion of Revelator, adding Baiken and Answer, new story chapters, new techniques and a general balance update.
On PC, REV 2 requires the base game GUILTY GEAR Xrd -REVELATOR- when purchased as an upgrade.
This entry focuses on the original Revelator version, its combat system, roster, main modes and role in the Guilty Gear storyline, without treating REV 2 additions as part of the base game.
