Fire Emblem Engage

One thousand years after the war that sealed away Sombron, the Fell Dragon, Alear awakens with no memory of their past. As the ancient enemy's seal begins to weaken, the Divine Dragon must travel across the continent of Elyos to gather the twelve Emblem Rings. These artifacts allow legendary heroes such as Marth, Sigurd and Celica to lend their power. Accompanied by princes, princesses and warriors from the different kingdoms, Alear sets out to recover the rings before Sombron and his allies can use them to restore his strength.

Overview

Presentation

Fire Emblem Engage is a turn-based tactical RPG developed by Intelligent Systems. The adventure takes place on the continent of Elyos, divided into several kingdoms surrounding the sacred land of Lythos.

The player takes the role of Alear, the Divine Dragon, whose gender can be chosen at the beginning of the adventure. After sleeping for one thousand years, Alear awakens with no memory of the past and discovers that Sombron, the Fell Dragon, threatens to return.

To stop him, Alear must recover the twelve Emblem Rings scattered across Elyos. They contain the powers of heroes from previous entries in the series, including Marth, Celica, Sigurd, Roy, Lyn, Ike, Lucina, Corrin and Byleth.

A unit equipped with a ring can sync with its Emblem to gain new abilities. It can then use the Engage command to temporarily merge with that hero and gain access to especially powerful weapons, skills and attacks.

The combinations between units and Emblems form an important part of the strategy: the same ring can change a character's role depending on their class, stats and the situation.

Battles also bring back a stronger version of the weapon triangle. Exploiting a favorable weapon matchup can trigger a Break, preventing the affected unit from counterattacking until after its next combat.

Characters have classes with varied roles and can advance into new specializations. Skills, weapons and abilities inherited from Emblems allow each member of the army to be customized over time.

Between battles, Alear returns to the Somniel, a floating base. The player can manage equipment, train in the arena, develop bonds between characters and strengthen the relationship between units and their Emblems.

The Somniel also offers several side activities, including meals, fishing, exercise and caring for animals found during the journey.

Progression across the Elyos map gives access to main battles, skirmishes and Paralogues. Some of these missions are directly connected to Emblems and allow their bond with the legendary heroes to grow stronger.

Key points

  • A turn-based tactical RPG in the Fire Emblem series.

  • An adventure set on the continent of Elyos.
  • Sombron, the Fell Dragon, as the main threat.
  • A quest centered on the twelve Emblem Rings.
  • Historic series heroes such as Marth, Sigurd, Celica and Byleth.
  • Syncing links a unit to an Emblem's powers.
  • The Engage command allows temporary fusion with that hero.
  • Emblem-specific weapons, skills and special attacks.
  • The Break system rewards favorable weapon matchups.
  • Classes and skills allow units to be customized.
  • The Somniel serves as the base between missions.
  • Training, relationships, equipment and side activities.

Conclusion

Fire Emblem Engage places the Emblem Rings at the center of its tactical system. Assigning them to different units changes their abilities and creates numerous combinations between classes, weapons and legendary heroes.

Engage fusion provides temporary powers capable of changing the course of a battle, while Break increases the importance of weapon choice and positioning.

Around these battles, the Somniel gathers the main preparation and character-development systems before Alear continues the journey across Elyos to recover the twelve rings and confront Sombron.

Good to know

Fire Emblem Engage is developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo.

The game was released on January 20, 2023 exclusively for Nintendo Switch.

It is primarily a single-player experience.

The story follows a more linear structure than Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The developers deliberately chose a single overarching objective centered on collecting the twelve rings in order to place greater emphasis on tactical gameplay.

The main kingdoms visited are Firene, Brodia, Elusia and Solm, alongside the sacred land of Lythos.

The game offers Classic Mode, where defeated units can be permanently lost, and Casual Mode, where they return after battle.

The Draconic Time Crystal allows the player to rewind certain actions during battle and change previous decisions.

The Expansion Pass adds several additional Emblems, including Tiki, Hector, Soren, Camilla, Chrom with Robin, and Veronica.

Its fourth wave also introduces the Fell Xenologue, an additional campaign with new characters, battles and classes.

This entry focuses on the main campaign, Alear, the Emblem Rings, the Engage system, Break and the main progression mechanics of Fire Emblem Engage, without detailing every character, class or Expansion Pass feature.
