Overview
Presentation
Dynasty Warriors: Origins returns to the beginning of the Three Kingdoms period with a new protagonist: an unnamed amnesiac warrior who discovers the events of the era as he travels through a China descending into chaos.
The story begins before the Yellow Turban Rebellion and progresses through to the Battle of Chibi. This perspective allows players to follow the rise of several major historical figures, including Liu Bei, Cao Cao and Sun Jian, before their ambitions and alliances gradually reshape the country.
Combat retains the series' iconic 1 vs. 1,000 concept while greatly increasing the density of armies on screen. The protagonist cuts through entire formations of soldiers while facing officers who can withstand far more punishment than ordinary troops.
Normal and strong attacks are complemented by Arts, special techniques that consume Bravery built up during combat. Each weapon category has its own moves and Arts, encouraging players to experiment with different styles rather than rely on a single weapon throughout the adventure.
Defense also plays a more important role. The player can parry an attack at the right moment to create an opening, dodge techniques that cannot be blocked and gradually reduce an enemy officer's Fortitude to leave them vulnerable.
Battles are not determined by individual performance alone. Army morale, base control and the situation across different parts of the battlefield directly influence how the front evolves. Rescuing allies in danger or defeating an important officer can therefore shift the balance of an entire battle.
The protagonist can also command troops and trigger advanced tactics with allied forces. Enemy armies have access to similar possibilities, sometimes forcing the player to interrupt an offensive in order to stop a maneuver capable of turning the battle around.
Certain officers can directly challenge the protagonist to duels. Their outcome affects more than the individual encounter: victory can greatly strengthen allied morale, while defeat weakens the army as a whole.
Several officers can also become companions. During certain battles, the player can temporarily take direct control of them and use their abilities before returning to the protagonist.
Between battles, a world map allows players to travel through different regions, take part in skirmishes and side missions, purchase new weapons and deepen relationships with encountered characters. Progression eventually leads to choices that determine which major figures the protagonist will follow.

Conclusion
Dynasty Warriors: Origins refocuses the series on the early crises that lead into the Three Kingdoms period while giving the player a protagonist who stands outside the traditional historical factions.
Battles retain the scale associated with Dynasty Warriors, but place greater emphasis on officers, parries, morale and the overall situation across the battlefield.
The hero's progression, relationships and choices between the era's major figures therefore connect the massive battles to a more personal perspective on the historical events portrayed by the series.
