Synopsis

Dragon's Dogma 2

The Arisen is a chosen warrior whose heart has been taken by the Dragon. With part of their past lost, they set out on a journey shaped by the bond that connects them to the creature and by the destiny traditionally associated with those who bear the title of Arisen.

Their path leads through a world divided notably between Vermund, a human kingdom where a false Arisen has been placed on the throne, and Battahl, a beastren nation whose relationship with Pawns follows very different traditions.

Accompanied by mysterious otherworldly Pawns, the Arisen must travel across these lands, confront the creatures that inhabit them and pursue the Dragon while gradually uncovering the circumstances surrounding their place within this world.

Overview

Overview

Dragon's Dogma 2 expands the foundations of the original game around a larger and denser fantasy world. The Arisen still travels with a party of AI-controlled Pawns, climbs directly onto large monsters and adapts combat through vocations, but physics, environmental interactions and more reactive characters give encounters a broader range of possible outcomes.

Developed and published by Capcom, the game was released on March 22, 2024. The listed platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC. The associated genres are action, adventure, fantasy, RPG and open world. The specified mode is Single player, and the game uses Capcom’s RE ENGINE.

The Pawn system remains central. The player creates a customizable Main Pawn who permanently accompanies the Arisen, then recruits up to two additional Pawns created by other players or available offline. The party therefore contains up to four characters without turning the game into direct multiplayer.

Pawns retain knowledge acquired through their experiences. A companion familiar with a quest can offer to guide the party toward its destination, while other specializations can help interpret information or respond to particular situations encountered during exploration.

Party composition is closely connected to vocations. Fighter, Archer, Thief and Mage form the initial choices, while additional vocations become available through progression. Each determines the weapons, abilities and role available to the character, making a change of vocation a substantial change in combat style rather than a simple statistical adjustment.

Several vocations are reserved for the Arisen. Mystic Spearhand combines physical and magical attacks through the duospear, Magick Archer uses magical projectiles for offense and support, Trickster manipulates enemies through illusions and strengthens Pawns, while Warfarer can use equipment from multiple vocations at the cost of lower specialization.

Large monsters continue to function as physical spaces during combat. The Arisen can grab and climb creatures to reach vulnerable areas, remain attached while they move or use the terrain to create opportunities that would not exist through ground attacks alone.

Dragon's Dogma 2 develops this idea further through its physics system. Elements of the environment can influence encounters: structures can collapse, enemies can fall from elevated positions and parts of the terrain can be used to change the course of a fight. The interaction between creatures, Pawns and scenery creates situations that are not always resolved in exactly the same way.

The world is divided notably between Vermund and Battahl. Vermund is a human kingdom of green landscapes and fortified settlements, while Battahl is a beastren nation built among harsher canyons and ancient ruins. Each approaches the Dragon, the Arisen and the Pawns through different political and cultural perspectives.

Travel is deliberately part of the adventure. The player can move across the world on foot, use oxcarts between certain settlements or rely on specific fast-travel resources. Oxcarts do not remove the dangers of the journey, as attacks can interrupt the trip before the destination is reached.

Night also changes exploration. Visibility becomes more limited and the dangers encountered outside settlements increase, encouraging the party to make use of campsites found throughout the world. Camp equipment allows the group to rest before continuing its journey.

The larger world gives these systems more room to interact. Encounters can involve wandering creatures, travelers, quests or unexpected conflicts, while the composition and knowledge of the Pawn party can alter the information and options available to the player.

Dragon's Dogma 2 therefore retains the central identity of the first game while strengthening the relationship between party composition, exploration and physical interaction. Pawns provide autonomous companions, vocations reshape the player’s capabilities, and the environment itself becomes another component that can influence combat.

Key takeaways

  • The player controls an Arisen accompanied by up to three AI-controlled Pawns.
  • A customizable Main Pawn remains with the Arisen, while two additional Pawns can be recruited.
  • Pawns can use acquired knowledge about quests, locations and the world to assist the player.
  • Vocations determine the character’s weapons, abilities and combat role.
  • Arisen-exclusive vocations include Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, Trickster and Warfarer.
  • Large monsters can be grabbed and climbed directly during combat.
  • Physics and environmental interactions can alter the outcome of encounters.
  • Exploration takes place notably across Vermund and Battahl, with travel, camps and oxcarts forming part of the journey.

Conclusion

Dragon's Dogma 2 retains the Pawn system and vocation-based combat of the original while placing them inside a world designed for more interactions between characters, creatures and terrain. Party composition therefore influences not only combat power but also the information and assistance available while traveling.

The physical relationship with large monsters remains equally important. Climbing, positioning and environmental opportunities allow encounters to be approached through more than direct damage, while each vocation changes which solutions are available to the Arisen.

Vermund, Battahl, camps and limited travel options reinforce this emphasis on the journey itself. Dragon's Dogma 2 consequently develops its open-world structure around the interaction between the Arisen, the Pawn party and a world whose systems continue to operate around them.
