Presentation
Days Gone builds its open world around one central idea: the road is never completely safe. Post-apocalyptic Oregon alternates between forests, mountains, abandoned towns and more arid stretches of land, but the journey between two objectives often becomes an adventure in itself. Freakers move through the environment, hostile groups can set ambushes and an apparently quiet situation can quickly become dangerous.
Deacon’s motorcycle therefore plays an essential role. It serves as transportation, but also as a mobile refuge and constant companion. Its fuel must be monitored, damage repaired and different parts can be upgraded. Traveling far from a camp with an almost empty tank can turn a simple journey into an improvised search for gasoline. This dependence gives distances and detours an importance that many open worlds usually try to erase.
Survival also relies on gathering resources. Deacon searches buildings, vehicles and abandoned camps to craft bandages, Molotov cocktails and other useful equipment. Firearms play an important role, but ammunition and supplies are not always available when the player needs them. Stealth therefore regularly allows resources to be conserved or a confrontation that has become too risky to be avoided.
The Freakers give the game its other major distinctive feature. Alone or gathered in small groups, they represent a relatively familiar threat. Hordes completely change that logic. Dozens, and sometimes hundreds, of creatures can move like a single mass and pursue Deacon through the environment. Facing them requires preparing weapons, studying the terrain, identifying narrow passages and explosive elements, then remaining constantly on the move when the original plan inevitably stops working.
This spectacular dimension does not, however, define Days Gone by itself. Much of the story focuses on communities trying to rebuild something after the collapse. Each camp has its own rules, leaders and vision of survival. Deacon, who initially prefers staying on the road rather than permanently joining one of them, is gradually forced to confront the question of what he still wants to preserve.
This evolution gives meaning to the character. Deacon can appear brutal, distrustful and solitary, but his relationships with Boozer and the memory of Sarah constantly reveal a man who has mainly convinced himself that he has nothing left to lose. The open world therefore tells two forms of survival in parallel: the one that consists of finding enough fuel and ammunition to make it through the day, and the one that requires accepting the possibility of caring about something again.
What to remember
- An open-world action-survival game set in an Oregon devastated two years after a global pandemic.
- Deacon St. John, a former biker turned drifter whose journey remains deeply marked by the disappearance of his wife Sarah.
- A motorcycle essential to travel, which must be maintained, refueled and gradually upgraded.
- A dangerous world where limited resources, ambushes and unexpected encounters make preparation genuinely important.
- Hordes capable of bringing together an impressive number of Freakers and turning combat into encounters built around movement and use of the environment.
- A story that gives as much importance to grief, friendship and survivor communities as it does to the collapse of the world itself.
Conclusion
Days Gone finds its personality in the relationship between Deacon and the road. The motorcycle is not simply a convenient way to cross a large map: it embodies his refusal to settle down, his need to be able to leave at any moment and the drifter lifestyle he adopted after losing what once gave meaning to his life.
The game nevertheless takes time before all of its elements fully fall into place. Its opening slowly establishes the characters, camps and progression systems, while some open-world activities rely on familiar structures and can become repetitive. This length contrasts with the hordes, which represent its most immediately distinctive and spectacular moments.
But reducing Days Gone to those hundreds of Freakers would mean overlooking what truly sustains its story. Deacon is not only trying to survive the next night. He must gradually decide whether there are still people, relationships and a future he is willing to believe in.
That is what ultimately gives meaning to the long roads of Oregon. Behind the survival, the weapons and the engines lies the story of a man who knows how to keep moving forward, but must relearn why he is doing it.
