Overview
Developed by Nintendo EPD Production Group No. 8 and published by Nintendo, Bowser's Fury is a video game released on February 12, 2021. The platforms listed in this entry are Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The associated genres are action, adventure and platforming, with single-player, multiplayer and cooperative modes.
The adventure places Mario in Lake Lapcat, a vast environment made up of islands connected by a single body of water. Unlike a succession of entirely separate levels, the player can move freely between different areas and choose from several objectives without systematically returning to a traditional map.
Progression is mainly based on collecting Cat Shines. They are obtained by completing different platforming challenges, exploring the islands, fighting enemies or solving certain situations using Mario’s abilities.
Each main island features a lighthouse covered in black goop. Obtaining a Cat Shine allows its light to be restored and clears part of this corruption, which can also reveal new sections of the environment.
Lake Lapcat is divided into several regions that gradually become accessible. New islands can emerge or be freed from the black goop as progression continues, expanding the available space without abandoning the continuity of the world.
Travel between the islands notably makes use of Plessie, who allows Mario to quickly cross large stretches of water. Some activities are built directly around this mount, with courses, boosts and objectives spread across the lake.
Fury Bowser acts as a recurring threat rather than a boss encountered only at predetermined moments. At regular intervals, the sky darkens, a storm breaks out and Fury Bowser rises above the lake to attack Mario with flames, projectiles and large-scale movements.
These appearances temporarily alter the environment. Certain attacks from Fury Bowser can notably destroy otherwise inaccessible Fury Blocks, turning his presence into an element required to obtain some Cat Shines.
Collecting a Cat Shine during one of these phases relights a lighthouse and can force Fury Bowser to retreat. The player may therefore have to continue pursuing an objective while the entire world is under attack.
Cat Shines are also used to free the Giga Bells, enormous versions of the Super Bell located around the lake. Once enough Shines have been collected and Fury Bowser appears, Mario can use one of these bells.
He then transforms into Giga Cat Mario, a gigantic version of Cat Mario capable of confronting Fury Bowser directly. The change in scale turns all of Lake Lapcat into an arena, with islands previously explored as platforming areas becoming part of the scenery for a battle between two giant characters.
Outside these confrontations, Mario retains the movements and transformations associated with the 3D platforming of Super Mario 3D World. Several power-ups can be collected and used to adapt exploration to the obstacles encountered.
Bowser Jr. accompanies Mario throughout the adventure. In single-player, he is controlled by the game and can attack enemies, collect certain items or use his Magic Paintbrush to reveal hidden elements.
The player can adjust his level of assistance to determine how frequently he intervenes. It is also possible to directly point out certain environmental elements on which he should use his paintbrush.
In cooperative play, a second player controls Bowser Jr. independently from Mario. He can fly using his vehicle, attack enemies and take part in exploration, even though Mario remains the character around whom progression is mainly structured.
The organization of Lake Lapcat therefore combines two different rhythms. Free exploration allows the player to move from one challenge to another, while Fury Bowser’s regular appearances interrupt this progression and temporarily transform the entire world.
Bowser's Fury therefore builds its gameplay around a continuous environment where collecting, platforming, water traversal and cooperation are directly linked to a dynamic threat. Cat Shines allow players to explore more of the lake, repel Fury Bowser and activate the Giga Bells required for large-scale confrontations.
Key takeaways
- Bowser's Fury takes place in Lake Lapcat, a vast continuous environment made up of several freely accessible islands.
- Progression is based on collecting Cat Shines, obtained through platforming, exploration and combat challenges.
- Fury Bowser regularly appears during exploration, temporarily changing the world and attacking Mario on a large scale.
- The Giga Bells allow Mario to become Giga Cat Mario and directly confront Fury Bowser.
- Plessie makes it easier to travel across the lake and is involved in several exploration-based activities.
- Bowser Jr. accompanies Mario in single-player and can be controlled by a second player in cooperative play.
Conclusion
Bowser's Fury adapts Mario’s 3D platforming mechanics to a more open environment, where the different islands of Lake Lapcat belong to the same continuous space rather than a succession of entirely separate stages.
Cat Shines structure this exploration by providing different objectives while directly contributing to clearing the black goop, opening new areas and activating the Giga Bells.
Fury Bowser’s periodic presence adds a second layer to how the world functions. His attacks can interrupt an ongoing activity, temporarily alter exploration conditions or become necessary to access certain elements.
Bowser's Fury therefore combines platforming, free exploration, cooperation and very large-scale confrontations within a single environment whose state evolves as progression continues.
