Overview

Presentation

Black Myth: Wukong is an Action RPG developed by Game Science, directly inspired by Chinese mythology and especially by Journey to the West, one of the great classics of Chinese literature.

The player controls the Destined One, a simian warrior who travels through different regions in search of the truth hidden behind an ancient legend.

The adventure alternates exploration, encounters and battles against a wide bestiary of yaoguai, fantastical creatures and powerful enemies inspired by the novel and other Chinese traditions.

Combat is built mainly around the staff, supported by light attacks, heavy attacks, dodges and special techniques. A Focus gauge allows more powerful attacks to be prepared over the course of a fight.

The Destined One can develop three main staff stances: Smash, Pillar and Thrust. Each notably changes his heavy attacks and allows the player to adapt their approach depending on distance, mobility or enemy behavior.

Spells form another essential part of the combat system. Some immobilize or disrupt enemies, while others provide defensive, mobility or diversion options.

The character can also use transformations, temporarily taking on the form and abilities of other creatures.

Certain defeated enemies can leave behind their Spirit. Once equipped, it allows the Destined One to occasionally use a technique directly inspired by that creature.

Magical artifacts, weapons, armor and other equipment complement these systems and allow different combinations to be built depending on the challenges encountered.

Progression is based on points used to develop the Destined One's abilities. Several branches cover staff combat, spells, transformations and different general skills.

Conclusion

Black Myth: Wukong builds its identity around action combat centered on the staff, complemented by spells, transformations, Spirits and artifacts drawn from its mythological world.

The different stances and progression options allow the Destined One to adapt to the many enemies encountered, while battles against highly varied creatures form a major part of the adventure.

Its story also develops a new interpretation of Journey to the West, focusing both on the legends surrounding the Monkey King and on the stories and motivations of the beings encountered along the Destined One's path.

Good to know

Black Myth: Wukong is developed and published by Game Science.

The game was released on August 20, 2024 for PlayStation 5 and PC, although PC storefronts may display August 19 depending on publication time zones.

The game places significant emphasis on battles against bosses and enemies with their own moves and abilities, but also on exploration, encountered characters and the stories surrounding the creatures of its world.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions support platform-specific features, while the PC version is available notably through Steam and Epic Games Store.

This entry focuses on the Destined One, Chinese mythology, staff combat, stances, spells, transformations, Spirits and the main progression systems, without detailing every boss, area or narrative revelation.
