The Age of Empires III campaign follows the fate of the Black family across three generations, in a story narrated by Amelia Black. In the late 16th century, Morgan Black, a commander of the Knights of St. John, helps defend Malta against Ottoman forces. After discovering clues about the Lake of the Moon and the legendary Fountain of Youth, he is sent to the New World to locate this mysterious source of eternal life. His expedition takes him from the Caribbean to New Spain and then Florida, where he encounters the pirate Elisabet Ramsey, the Ottoman commander Sahin and a secret society known as the Circle of Ossus. As he uncovers the true intentions of his companions, Morgan becomes involved in a struggle to prevent the Circle from seizing the Fountain. This first adventure begins a family saga whose remaining two acts follow the descendants of the Black family.

Overview
Presentation
Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition is a remastered version of the real-time strategy game Age of Empires III, originally released in 2005. The adventure shifts the franchise's historical setting toward the early modern period, from the exploration of the New World to the great colonial powers and the military transformations of the Industrial Age. Players lead a civilization, build settlements, develop their economy and command armies to expand their influence. This edition preserves the foundations of the original title while modernizing graphics, controls and several gameplay mechanics. It also brings together content from the historical expansions The WarChiefs and The Asian Dynasties, allowing players to explore conflicts and civilizations across Europe, the Americas and Asia.
Each match revolves around building a colony and managing resources. Villagers gather food, wood and gold, while buildings allow players to recruit units, develop technologies and strengthen their defenses. Progression takes place across five major stages, from the Discovery Age to the Imperial Age, gradually unlocking advanced firearms, artillery and more powerful military units. Territorial control also plays a central role: explorers can discover treasures, while trading posts established along trade routes provide economic and strategic advantages. Battles combine infantry, cavalry, artillery and naval forces, in confrontations where army composition and the use of terrain directly influence the outcome.
One of this installment's defining features is the Home City system, which represents the political and economic center supporting the colony. By accumulating experience during a match, players can request shipments of resources, units or technologies from their Home City. These reinforcements are determined by cards arranged into a customizable deck, allowing different strategies to be prepared before each confrontation. Advancing through the ages also involves political choices that provide specific advantages. Certain civilizations possess distinctive mechanics, such as the ability to launch a Revolution to transform their military and economic organization. This combination of local development, external support and political decisions distinguishes Age of Empires III from the franchise's other installments.
The main campaign, titled Blood, Ice and Steel, follows the Black family across three generations, in a fictional narrative intertwined with several historical events. The first act follows Morgan Black, a Knight of St. John involved in the defense of Malta before embarking on an expedition to the Americas in search of the Fountain of Youth. The following acts continue this family story across new periods and conflicts. Missions feature scripted objectives, such as defending a fortress, destroying an enemy position or protecting a convoy. Additional campaigns inherited from the expansions broaden the narrative setting, particularly toward the Indigenous peoples of the Americas and Asian powers. The Definitive Edition preserves these adventures while adding standalone Historical Battles, inspired by real conflicts.
Alongside the campaigns, the game offers skirmishes against artificial intelligence, competitive multiplayer matches and historical scenarios playable cooperatively. Civilizations feature distinctive units, Home City cards and economic characteristics that influence how they develop and fight. The Art of War mode allows players to deepen their understanding of management, movement and combat through focused challenges. Technically, the remaster introduces reworked three-dimensional models, improved textures, a modernized interface and resolutions reaching 4K, accompanied by a remastered soundtrack. Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition therefore combines colonial management, military confrontations and strategic customization, in an expanded version of the third main installment.

Conclusion
Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition preserves the distinctive mechanics of the franchise's third installment while incorporating them into a modernized presentation. Colony management, Home City cards and political choices give its real-time strategy system a character of its own, while the diversity of civilizations allows players to approach economic development and military confrontations in different ways.
The campaign following the Black family combines fiction with historical events, while standalone battles and expansion content broaden the periods and regions represented. Skirmishes and multiplayer extend these mechanics into matches with changing circumstances. This edition therefore brings together territorial conquest, strategic customization and stories from the colonial era, while preserving the original game's defining characteristics.
Good to know
Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition was released on October 15, 2020, for PC. It remasters the franchise's third main installment, originally published in 2005. This new version features a graphical overhaul with support for 4K Ultra HD, reworked 3D models, interface improvements and a remastered soundtrack. It retains the original game's general real-time strategy mechanics.
At launch, the Definitive Edition included 16 playable civilizations, including the Swedes and Incas, two new factions added to the fourteen civilizations from the original game and its expansions. Differences between civilizations involve their military units, buildings, economic advantages and Home City cards. Subsequent additions notably introduced the United States, Mexico, Ethiopians, Hausa, Italians and Maltese.
The Blood, Ice and Steel campaign is divided into three acts corresponding to three generations of the Black family. Each uses factions adapted to its narrative rather than a standard civilization: the Knights of St. John for Morgan Black, John Black's Mercenaries for the second act and the United States for the third. The entire story is narrated by Amelia Black, voiced in the original English version by Tasia Valenza. The game also includes the campaigns inherited from The WarChiefs and The Asian Dynasties.
The Definitive Edition introduces two types of additional content: Historical Battles, focusing on particular events and confrontations, and The Art of War, a series of challenges designed to help players master the main strategic mechanics. Historical Battles notably include operations inspired by the conquest of the New World and conflicts of the early modern period. Several scenarios can also be completed cooperatively.
The Home City system allows players to build card decks that determine which shipments are available during battles. These cards can provide soldiers, resources or economic and military improvements. Unlike the original game's progression system, Home City cards are unlocked from the beginning in the Definitive Edition, allowing players to freely create their strategies without having to earn the cards progressively.
The game has continued to receive expansions, including The African Royals in 2021, Knights of the Mediterranean in 2022 and The Baltic Powers in September 2026. The latter adds the Danes and Poles, alongside new maps and additional modes, including Regicide and Independence. These expansions enrich the strategic possibilities and diversity of civilizations without replacing the game's original structure.
Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition offers single-player matches, multiplayer battles and cooperative Historical Battles. Online features include cross-play between compatible PC versions, a spectator mode and support for community modifications. A scenario editor also allows players to create custom situations. The game features voice acting, text and subtitles in English, French, Spanish, German and several other languages.
